🎧 The wait is over! Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition is now an audiobook! Unbuild Walls, from Silky Shah, executive director of Detention Watch Network, dives into US immigration policy and its relationship to mass incarceration, from the last 40 years up to the present, showing how the prison-industrial complex and immigration enforcement are intertwined systems of repression. 🎉Available NOW! A new book, Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition, by Silky Shah, Executive Director of Detention Watch Network, @silkys13 dives into US immigration policy and its relationship to mass incarceration, from the last 40 years to the present, showing how the prison-industrial complex and immigration enforcement are intertwined systems of repression. Shah’s book is a timely intervention as anti-immigrant sentiment fueled by fear-mongering, a scarcity mindset, and racist rhetoric has reached a dangerous fever pitch in today’s political discourse. “Abolition is not only a vision, but a guide and theory of change that helps us get closer to racial and migrant justice,” says Shah. “ The dehumanization of communities of color and immigrants not only results in more detention, incarceration, and deportation, it prevents us from addressing the real issues facing communities across the US, especially social and economic inequality.” Buy Unbuild Walls on @haymarketbooks and Join Silky on her 2024 Unbuild Walls Book Tour at the link in our bio or visit detentionwatchnetwork.org/unbuild-walls 🎨 Illustrations by: @mixedchange by @silkys13

When we get to the other side of this authoritarian moment (and we will), are we going to be ready to lead? Are we offering clear enough vision of what we mean when we say "Abolish ICE", so that we are prepared when the opportunity comes? As we mark 25 years since 9/11, the enforcement apparatus built under the "War on Terror" reshaped and provided the infrastructure for today's domestic policing, immigration detention, and the repression of dissent. 🎧 This week on #BlockAndBuild, Silky Shah (Executive Director of Detention Watch Network) and Darakshan Raja (Executive Director of Muslims for Just Futures) breakdown what's happened in those 25 years and how we build strong movements to overcome, not just survive, these systems. 🔗 Full episode link in bio! #ConvergenceMag #LeftistPodcast #BlockAndBuild #communityorganizer #movementmediaalliance #DetentionWatchNetwork #EndTheICEAge #Abolition #ImmigrantJustice #DivestInvest #SocialJustice #Organizing #EndStateViolence by @silkys13

Yesterday I visited the memorial site for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. Most of it has been removed by the mayor but posters of his image have been plastered across the East End. It’s hard to process the devastating loss of these times and also it’s heartening to see the community coming together to honor his life and demand an end to this violent and deadly agency. by @silkys13
20th anniversary screening of Homotopia (2006) & the sequel Criminal Queers (2015), directed by Eric A. Stanley & Chris E. Vargas @stillhere_415 @chrisevargas ✨Post-screening discussion with the directors and Silky Shah, author of Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition (2024). @silkys13 💀Set sometime in the future-present Homotopia (2006) chronicles a group of radical queer’s dedicated to exposing the trouble with gay marriage, dismantling the State, undoing Empire, while looking totally fierce. Woven into the story of Yoshi’s adventures in love, resistance, and sex, is a critique of the crushing violence of homonormativity and its deadly perpetuation of US patriotism, conservative kinship structures and affective accumulation. Homotopia holds cinematic assumptions hostage through its motley assemblage of never-passing crew. Race, gender, ability and desire are reworked through an anti-colonial take of queer struggle creating a visual rhythm of melancholic utopianism that knows there may be no future but still hopes today is not their last. Love revolution, not State delusion, Homotopia. ⛓️‍💥Criminal Queers (2015) visualizes a radical trans/queer struggle against the prison industrial complex and toward a world without walls. Remembering that prison breaks are both a theoretical and material practice of freedom, this film imagines what spaces might be opened up if crowbars, wigs, and metal files become tools for transformation. The film advances a vision of our collective liberation by abolishing the structures and systems that confine our hearts, genders, and desires. Follow Yoshi, Joy, Susan, and Lucy as they fiercely discuss everything from the Human Rights Campaign and hate crimes legislation to the non-profitization of social movements. Criminal Queers grows our collective liberation by working to abolish the multiple ways our hearts, genders, and desires are confined. by @silkys13
How to Close a Camp: Dispatches from the Fight Against Immigrant Detention Join us for a conversation with Silky Shah, John Washington, Harsha Walia, and Daniel Denvir, hosted with The Dig and Detention Watch Network Tuesday, July 21st at 5:00 pm ET 🔗 Link in bio to register ----- Masked federal agents are kidnapping and killing our neighbors, on the streets and behind the bars of hundreds of detention centers across the country. In How to Close a Camp, award-winning journalist and translator John Washington offers a galvanizing, clear-eyed case for why we must close these camps—and how to do it. In spite of the decades-long growth of immigrant detention, communities have been fighting back against camps—and winning. Washington distills strategies and lessons from successful campaigns to close camps and block or slow the opening of new ones, drawing on conversations with veteran organizers from the movement. Chipping away at the infrastructure of the camp is the only way to stave off increasing xenophobic and authoritarian violence. It is time to close all the camps and build a world that no longer requires them. by @silkys13
“Today, the Trump administration’s violent attacks on immigrant communities and the horrendous conditions in detention centers have laid bare the enduring harm of this system,” says Silky Shah, executive director of Detention Watch Network to @huffpost. ICE’s immigration detention system does not need to exist, and communities across the country and people currently detained are organizing to end it and build a better future for all of us.
