~DESASTILLERO _ Nuevos urbanismos portuarios~

/SHIP UN-BREAKING YARD _ New portuary urbanisms/

Ships as the goods they transport, tear overtime and become waste when they reach the end of their operational live. Their final destination are the Ship Breaking Facilities all over the world, yet only a minor fraction of them choose to navigate to an environmentally clean and sound Scrapyard. The vast majority of the world’s end-of-life fleet, full of toxic substances, is simply broken down - by hand - on the beaches of South Asia. UN-BREAKING YARD wants to bring the action of clean ship-breaking to the port of Lisbon, to normalize an inevitable process in the marine industry. The artificial island where it is established is formed by the deposition of dredged material obtained from the estuary basin.
On one hand, occupying a third of the island and rooted in the topography, three obsolete boats are brought from Aveiro shipyard to conform the Yard. Thus, from these ships, which were destined to be scrapped in India and Bangladesh, we build the five main buildings that make the program possible. Transmuting the architectural language towards the naval one, hulls, frames or bulkheads become structures, creating spaces for both machines and people in the form of warehouses or offices.
On the other hand, the other two thirds of the island make up a dune ecosystem destined for the environmental recovery of the estuary. In this natural space we find other uses for the citizens such as beach bars, boat rentals, or points of sale of material and equipment from the scrapped ships.
In summary, we find that wrapped between the calm of the urban beaches and the dunar ecosystem, the Ship Un-Breaking Yard does not stop its activity. It is a Meta- Scrapping-Yard, ships that are scrapped surrounded by scrapped ships. The goal is clear, to reincorporate tons of recoverable raw material from already useless ships back to the system, stablishing the yard as an example of the urge for upcycling in a world that little by little is shrinking its capacity.
