Yesterday I had the privilege of being able to learn from one of the best modern jiu-jitsu athletes to compete in mma. Thank you Damien Maia for the awesome seminar and super slick techniques.

Now I just need to train with GSP and the BJJ trifecta will be complete 😅

🥀 Soul Nectar | 📸: @emilsmarie

Any soul that drank the nectar of your passion was lifted.

From that water of life he is in a state of elation.

Death came, smelled me, and sensed your fragrance instead.

From then on, death lost all hope of me.

⚡️ Do Difficult Things ⚡️

Think about those mornings you wake up and you know you have to go to practice. You have a choice. Do you pack your bag and drive to the gym? Or do you make an excuse as to why you can’t go to the gym?

Everyday you make the decision to go train, you gain a little bit more mental fortitude, a little more resilience. Because you’re faced with the choice of doing something you KNOW is going to be difficult (especially when you’re already tired and run down) or deciding to give in to the weakness of your mind, stay home, bullshit and find an excuse not to go.

If you wake up and make the decision to do something difficult and you conquer it, you become better. Add all those decisions up and over time, you become the person you always said you wanted to be.

All it takes it waking up this morning and deciding that you are doing to do the difficult thing, no matter how hard, painful, stressful or unknown it might be.

I am no better than you. I just make peace with the fact that if I want what I say I want, then these choices are not actually choices. The decision was been made long before I woke up this morning.

Your goals are not optional, right? So why would the steps to get you to those goals be?

What decision will you make this morning?

Doesn’t matter what country I’m in. There’s always a gym. There’s always somebody ready to show me how much I still don’t know.
⠀⠀⠀
26 years on the mats and the only thing I know for sure is that perfection is way ahead of me. Always just ahead. I’ve been chasing it across the world and it keeps moving.
⠀⠀⠀
I used to think that was frustrating but now I think that’s the whole point. Mastery is the goal but we will never achieve it. The point is the journey of a martial artist, seeking something we’ll never complete.

I’m grateful to have something I’ll never finish. taken in Tiger Muay Thai Bohol by @simhotep

⚡️ Talent vs Hard Work ⚡️

“Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard”

We’ve all heard that quote, especially if you’re a martial artist.

It seems pretty simple then right? We know that just having talent won’t get you to the top. BUT if you put in those 10,000 hours?? You’re practically guaranteed to be at the top.

Understanding the principle that all you need to do is put in more time gives you something within YOUR control — an action YOU can take every day. While understanding this gives you an edge, it certainly doesn’t mean that it’s gonna be easy.

In fact, it’s extremely difficult and requires a lot of effort and mental toughness.

When we choose not to practice whatever our passion may be, we make a choice that’s probably informed by habit. We’re used to NOT doing uncomfortable things.

Our habit is to avoid. Avoid the anxiety, fear of trying and failing, or trying and never being good enough. If you continue to practice and put in the time — failure just isn’t possible. The only way failure is possible is giving up before you’ve reached your goal.

Instead of letting your fear-based habits affect your actions, it’s important to create new habits, new routines, new reactions to difficult situations. When things get rough, instead of letting your instant reaction be shrinking or hiding, it should be to LEAN IN and CONTINUE ANYWAY. That is the only way you’ll get in your proverbial 10,000 hours.

But...so many of us are too comfortable with our lives. EVEN WHEN WE ARE UNHAPPY! We KNOW we have so much more inside of us, but we choose not to fight against our old patterns, not to change our behaviors, because we’re afraid of going through the discomfort we associate with going through the process of changing our habits.

You probably won’t see win after win after win. You’ll end up losing sometimes. But that doesn’t matter, because your goal should not be to always receive positive feedback or achievement.

Simply to put in your hours and to enjoy it along the way! BUT don’t stop until you’ve reached where you want to be.

THANK YOU YOU FOR COMING TO MY TED TALK LOL 🤣

// Perception // : A lot of people will tell you that it doesn’t matter what people think of you. Throughout the years I believed that logic. However, the more I’ve given thought to it, the more I realize that it’s actually incorrect (in my opinion).

Other peoples perception of you is actually just as important as your own. What others believe about you shapes who you are to the world. Your home, school, job, gym, neighborhood, city, state, country and the world will all have different perceptions of you. And they could all quite possibly be true.

That guy you told to fuck off because he cut you off in traffic thinks you’re an asshole (and you were in that moment). The girl at the coffee shop you were kind to thinks you’re a nice person (and you were in that moment).

The point I’m making is, everybody’s perception of you is in some way or another accurate IF it’s based on their interactions with you (no matter how small). As humans, we are all very complex beings. It’s impossible for us to be ONE type of person. We will always flow through different mental states, have different emotions and behave in different ways.

With that being said, do you believe that you’re accountable for the perception of you that is floating around in the world? Or is only what you think of yourself important?

🧠 Pre-Fight Preparation 🧠

All fighters do different things when they are warming up in the back. Some like to party and dance to music, while others take naps or meditate. I like a healthy dose of both. I need my time to be present with my mind but I also need my time to get into my groove and break a sweat.

Sometimes I want to hear Sade, other times I want to hear 50 Cent. Regardless of what I choose, I am doing what I feel in that moment and allowing myself to flow with it.

Whatever your method of preparation is, make sure it works for you. Find small things to add or remove that help you feel a little better about walking into a cage for an organized fist fight 🫠

⚠️ Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you.

Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it?

Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think every thing you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told to want?

Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive.

If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned.
