BIRDS FROM UGANDA 🦅 🇺🇬

My final project - Foundation of Fashion. MAY 2023

This concept explores the emotions felt before, during and after the Ugandan Exodus of 1972. All Indians were expelled from their home by the Ugandan Dictator; Idi Amin. My grandparents and parents were amongst these nomads. Indians travelled to colonial countries; most prominently; Britain. The change in climate, lifestyle, culture and socio economic status can be seen through their clothes. Prominent emotions include nostalgia, isolation, rejection, determination and grief.

The clothes embody a mix of Masai warriors, the idea of migrational birds and a mix of British fashion compared with Indian and Ugandan fashion at the time.

On a personal note, this concept consumed me and through books I read and family I spoke to, I felt like I had learnt a part of family’s history that was always not discussed and I was understanding so much more about my generational story, where I come from, and where my culture and language comes from. The passing of my grandfather initiated this interest in his past and I was astonished. There was one thing that grabbed my attention the most which was when my Grandad (Dada) and Grandma (Dadi) and my 5 year old Dad were on the plane after being forced to leave the country with only £50s. My Dada got pulled aside and nearly got taken to be shot. He ended up knowing the Ugandan Army official as they went to school together. My Dada was the only one that sat next to him in class as the officer had to walk hours in the heat and always smelt like sweat. My Grandad’s kindness saved his life in the worst time imaginable. All parts of this story are horrific and meaningful and I wanted to shine a little light on a lot of immigrants pasts’ that seems to be forgotten in the UK.
