What is “good taste” and who gets to decide?

For her graduate collection Is Taste Real?, Simi Madlani looks at how ideas of taste and value are shaped by cultural capital, institutional authority and the contexts in which clothes and materials are read.

Drawing from her own experience of entering art school without having inherited the same cultural codes as many of her peers, Madlani questions why certain references, materials and ways of making are understood as sophisticated or valuable while others are dismissed. Through material experimentation and an approach to process that challenges established standards, the collection asks what becomes possible when those standards are no longer treated as universal.

Throughout this week, we’ll be highlighting these incredible artists and their powerful work 💖

Held inside the King’s Bedchamber at The Queen’s House, these artists are reclaiming and holding space in a room once occupied by monarchs.
