CHAPITRE I : MANASLU, 8 163 m 🇳🇵

Le prologue a duré huit ans. Il est temps d’écrire le premier chapitre. 🏔️

Je m’appelle Simon Niklaus. J’ai 33 ans, je suis aide-soignant et enseignant en Suisse.
Je ne suis pas alpiniste professionnel. Je suis simplement un gars ordinaire avec un rêve immense :

« Gravir les 14 plus hauts sommets de la planète, tous à plus de 8 000 mètres, sans oxygène supplémentaire. »

Huit années de montagnes, d’entraînement, d’erreurs et d’apprentissages m’ont amené jusqu’ici. Des Alpes à l’Ama Dablam, en passant par l’Aconcagua et l’Annapurna IV, chaque expédition a fait partie du même chemin.
Et maintenant, ça commence... pour de vrai.

Mon premier 8 000.
Ma première tentative sans oxygène supplémentaire.
Une montagne sur quatorze.

Mais ce projet va bien au-delà du simple fait de « cocher » quatorze sommets.
Il s’agit de voir jusqu’où une personne ordinaire peut aller lorsqu’elle donne suffisamment de temps, de travail et d’engagement à un rêve, tout en sachant quand continuer et quand faire demi-tour.

Je ne sais pas combien de temps cette aventure prendra.
Je ne sais pas combien de fois j’échouerai en chemin.
Mais je sais que tout commence maintenant.

Manaslu. 8 163 mètres. Népal.
Ce n’est que le début.

In 130 days... I will push my body to its limits.
I will attempt to climb my first 8000m peak,
without oxygen and without Sherpa support.
After climbing AmaDablam in 2023, Aconcagua (6962m) in 2025 and attempting Annapurna IV (7525m) also in 2025. I am now setting my sights on Manaslu 8163m, located in Nepal. I have 130 days left to find the funding, 130 days to secure sponsors, 130 days to be as strong as possible mentally and 130 days to be at my fittest. It will certainly be the hardest thing in my life but I now feel ready to tackle this challenge
which I have dedicated my life to for 5 years now.
It is only the beginning of my dream of climbing the 14x8000m without oxygen and I take you with me. Follow the journey and share it to whom it might inspire.

Hi ! 🙃 Here's the face that's been hiding under these technical layers on every post. 😅 I don't often post pictures of myself because nature's usually prettier, and I ain't a big fan of selfies either... only sometimes, you just happen to spend the whole night climbing and stand ALONE on the summit of a 4000m-peak at sunrise, and you don't really have a choice other than to take the photo yourself. 🤪🌄

Habillé pour l’Everest, par plus de 30 °C.🥵

Une combinaison faite pour le froid des 8000 mètres, portée dans un studio rempli de haze. C’est ce qu’a vécu @simon.niklaus_ pour le teaser de son projet : gravir les 14 plus hauts sommets du monde. 🏔️

Haze, lumières RGB, filtre halo : nous avons testé beaucoup de choses, et pris un vrai plaisir à expérimenter.

Schreckhorn 4,078 m. One of those days we won’t forget anytime soon.

Often considered the most difficult 4,000er in Switzerland by its normal route, the ZS+ Southwest Ridge gave us a proper adventure: over 18 hours from Schreckhornhütte to the summit and all the way down to Grindelwald station.

After a very short night, we got up at 1:45 AM and started at 2:30, crossing the Schreckfirn in darkness and reaching the start of the climbing at 3,450 m before 6:00.

From there, around 600 vertical metres of climbing up to 4a lead to the summit. About 400 m below the top, however, Simi developed stomach problems. We took a longer break and seriously considered turning around. After some rest, an Algifor and a caffeine shot - a combination I’m not sure I’d recommend in hindsight 😅 - he suddenly felt much better and we decided to push on.

Shortly before 10:00 we stood on the 4,078 m summit together with several of the climbers we'd met at the hut. The panorama was incredible: Grindelwald and even Bern in one direction, endless glaciers and mountains in the other, with the Eiger and Finsteraarhorn standing out in the distance.

Then came the long way down: around 20 rappels, where we teamed up with another rope team we'd met the night before Not sure our two rope system actually made us faster 😄, but by the end we'd perfected it and made two new friends along the way.

Back at Schreckhornhütte we quickly repacked and continued down at 17:30. The last Pfingstegg cable car was already gone. When we finally got reception, I realised my last train home was leaving in less than two hours.

So after already being on the move for around 16 hours, I started running. A while later I looked back and saw Simi running after me. 😂

We made the train.

It’s amazing what the body can still do when you think there can't be much left. Sometimes you only find out when you push it a little further.

Home at 00:30, falling asleep almost exactly 24 hours after the alarm.

Here are the raw moments right after the avalanche on Cholatse (6440m) on November 4th. No edit, nothing fancy. Just the shock, the confusion, and the terror of realizing we were still alive.

On November 4th, while climbing Cholatse at 6440 meters in the Himalaya, we were caught in a massive avalanche during the final meters of a steep couloir.
I fell almost 300 meters, first over the snow, then under it, slammed into rocks several times, and finally buried under a heavy layer of snow.
I couldn’t see anything. I couldn’t breathe. I had snow packed all the way down my throat.
I genuinely thought it was the end.
I kept repeating in my head, “Please, Not like this.”

After forcing an air pocket with my forearms, I managed to spit the snow out, regain air, and fight my way back.
Gaylu Sherpa suffered a concussion and spinal injuries. Another climber broke his foot and collarbone.
But somehow, against all odds, we all survived.

Many didn't have that chance on other avalanches that happened in the Himalaya that day 🕯R.I.P.

I’m still processing what happened. But today, more than fear, I feel gratitude.
Gratitude to still be here. Gratitude for the people who helped me get back down @14dawa @heli.everest @14mingma and @sevensummittreks for the fast rescue and evacuation in the morning. Thanks also to @val.babanov, @elias.the.spaniard and @wolfblitzaa for their assistance at basecamp.

*only started filming after making sure everyone in my group was alive and accounted for. Safety came first.*

6812m 🇳🇵🗻 A year ago, I stood on the summit of AmaDablam in Nepal with @daniel.benito.n and @sevensummittreks .Time flies, and I've just realized I've never really shared about this adventure, nor did I post this summit picture, which was taken at one of the most important and emotional moments of my life. 2024 has been a kind of a slow year. But seeing the movie Kaizen, in which I make a small appearance and met with @mathis_dumas , @inoxtag , and their team, kind of shook me, and took me back to this endeavor for which I am so grateful and made me think about the next ones to come....
