Goodbye Traumton.

For five years I’ve been part of the team, for three and a half with my own control room. Now, after nearly 30 years of music, sound and life, Traumton Studios is finally closing its doors on the 30th of September and with that, I’m moving on to a new home.

Words can’t truly describe how special this place has become to me. It shaped who I am as a sound engineer and Tonmeister more than any other place. I am full of gratitude, especially to the owner Wolfgang Loos, who took me into the studio and presented me with opportunities, mentorship and guidance in unmeasurable quantities and worth. I owe him and Stefi a big portion of, if not my entire career and I will never forget it.

I’m also full of gratitude towards all the artists I had the great pleasure of welcoming in these halls. You are far too many to list individually, but each and every recording-, mixing- and masteringsession is what makes living worthwhile to me and I still can’t wrap my head around the unbelievable privilege I have in being able to sustain myself doing the thing that I love most. You all are what makes it possible and I am eternally grateful.

At Traumton, I had my first commercial production, my first major label production, my first own control room, my first session with musicians flying in from literal other continents and got applauded for my bachelor and master degrees. I recorded classical piano sonatas, choir for chart-topping pop records, the weirdest modular-synths experience, finest avantgarde jazz, strings, jazz tentetts, quintets, quartets, trios, duos, the first release featuring me on the piano (I did it, Mrs. Piano Teacher!!!) and so much more.
The wonderful acoustics of the recording hall and the most beautiful grand piano I’ve ever heard made it all possible.

Now it’s on to new adventures and different pastures. Thank you Traumton. Thank you so much. taken in Traumton by @simondupp

I'm very happy to finally share this track with you.

This project has been a long journey of writing, recording, experimenting, and learning. Every release is another step toward the full album, and I'm grateful to everyone who has listened, shared, and supported this music along the way.

It’s been out a while, but happy Release to „Short Songs For Losers“!!!

In a world where pop music every year raises the bar for the most pristine, clean and polished sound possible, @half.of.a.rainbow and producer @conanclohessy take a different route:

Take a cheap tape recorder, lock yourself in a literal bedroom and create music, that makes you feel something.

Clean? Nope! Polished? Most certainly not! Vibe? 10/10!

What a joy mastering this fantastic piece of art! Quite often mastering is a lot about removing distractions and giving the music room to breathe. And while I like that part of the work a lot, there’s something so immensely satisfying about letting all the „distractions“ stay in and making sure that they all hit just the right spot.

Happy Release day to @b__o__d__i__e__s and @kat_frankie and their second single „The Dream“ from the same titled album, that’s coming out November 20th via @nanoq_records

In a world and time, where every imaginable sound is at a composers fingertips, there is still something so profoundly moving about the way the humble voices of human beings feel when joined together. The emotional connection is just so immediate and whenever this immediacy is paired with a great arrangement and composition as well as amazingly skilled singers, true magic is sure to transpire.

Mixing this record for me was all about letting these voices speak for themselves, giving them a space and stage to express their emotions in and enabling them to become something greater than the sum of their parts.

So grateful for the trust of the entire ensemble

Happy Release Day to @diegoalejandrojazz and the first single „Ciclos“ of his upcoming album.

I had the great fortune of stem mastering this album last summer. The entire album is a testament to Diego’s outstanding ability of fusing grooves of all kind with intricate horn arrangements and melodies into a blend, that equally gets you off your feet and at the same time leads you to distance places.

Happy Release day to @sethsjostromm and his album „Kom Hem“!

From the intimate arrangements of vocals and bass of Kom Hem Pt. 2 to the explosive beginning of Sing, from the free improvisiations of Stämma and Fill My Head to the beautiful melodies of 04.00 and Annalkan:
This album is truely unique in its expression, so diverse in its soundscapes. Yet every tune bears a sonic imprint, that ties it all together somehow.
In every note played, you can feel that Seth found a band, that, above all, listens. In a world that often rewards the boldest and loudest people, I find this very precious and rare.
I haven’t worked on many records, where it was so easy to place each element in the mix, because of the way that all the musicians gave space to each other. Listen for example to how the saxophone sneaks into the piano solo in Annalkan and how smoothely the piano then gives way for the saxophone for its own solo. All these transitions basically mixed themselves.

This album holds a special place in my heart and I hope it will find its place in yours too:

Happy release day to @eeden.music for their debut album "Train My Mind"!

Recorded at @hansastudios and @brewerystudios the album deals with the emotions and struggles, that come with leaving your hometown, with all its friends and familiarities behind, to start a new chapter in a different place.
The songs sing of heartbreak, loneliness, frustration with oneself, patriarchy, expectations, all tinged with a faint glimmer of hope.

The album being recorded in different studios and mixed by several engineers made my job in mastering very interesting. The mixes came in great to begin with and so it was on me, to blend their tonalities together, to form a coherent listening experience. A part of my job, that I enjoy very much, as it is not as much about fixing things, but rather just laying back, relaxing and helping the music to speak for itself.

An album like this can't possible be produced without a team of incredible creatives:

Happy Release day to @sethsjostromm and the first single „Röda Felt“ of his upcoming album „Kom Hem“!!

I’ve posted a little bit about this album before and if you read those stories, you know how much this album means to me.
Last year in June, when we recorded this album, I was feeling pretty burned out. I was feeling so immensely tired and exhausted, that I feared I wouldn’t be able to record at all.

Thankfully, this recording was the most intimate, calm, safe and all around peaceful recording session I ever had the fortune to lead. Wonderful, vulnerable music mixed together with some of the loveliest people I’ve met made these two days at Traumton unforgettable.

Röda Fält encapsulates the sound of Seth’s music and the overall atmosphere of the album perfectly. Calm, but with intention. Searching, yet not lost. Even in the loudest sections somehow it still feels introspective. What is a dichotomy for most composers, Seth manages to bring together in a way, that feels simply natural, obvious even.
It’s music, that is meant to be listened to attentively. It carries you away to the north, to vast meadows, mountains, lakes, to solitude.

Happy Release day to @dsahinmusic and her debut album „Sosun“!

This release is a really special one to me. I heard Chili the first time a couple of years ago busking at Moritzplatz, when I was still interning at Trixx Studios and on my way to work. I was absolutely mesmerised. A true alto voice, so powerful and rare.

Fast forward to last fall, when Chili contacted me about mixing her record. And what a record it is!
Deeply personal and emotional, Genre bending and blending, honouring her heritage and bringing it right into the 2020s. As I wrote in another post, it is a true labour of love, composed and crafted over a literal decade. From the acoustical „Surrender“ to the eerie modern soundscapes of „Settle Down“, every arrangement has D.$ahins unique sonic fingerprint embedded into it. Imagine the treat it was for me, to bring all these things together in the mix. Pure sonic bliss.

Happy release day to @flosse_band and their second album „Lotterleben“!

Recorded two years ago at Zentrifuge Berlin bei Tito Knapp, it brings back the bands signature sound, a mixture of complex, pointy rhythms and soft, melancholic melodies.

From an engineering standpoint, mixing this album was an extremely refreshing and interesting task. The traditional conventions of melodic instruments being accompanied by a rhythmsection no longer apply. Sax and trumpet serve both as melodic, but also rhythmic and, in absence of the traditional guitar or piano, as harmonic instruments. The bass aswell is multi purpose, nestling itself under the horns to play melodies or complete their harmonic webbings. Even the drums take part in the melodic activities with glockenspiel. It was my task then, to stage this ensemble in a way, that in every part each instrument found its place in relation to their role in the arrangement and granting the instruments a lot of room and flexibility for them to shift in and out of their roles seamlessly.

Happy Release day to @mevenstoser @sethsjostromm and @carlodayyani and their debut release Alm.

The same titled project started as a coincidence. Three friends went off on a little holiday in the woods of Scandinavia and luckily for us, they brought their instruments and means to record.

What followed were days of musical exploration, Improvisation and listening. Indeed, when you hear this record, the amount of space every player gives rather than takes is astonishing. It’s the sort of music, where the listener gets to experience the vastness of the landscapes and sceneries in which this music was recorded in too.

Thanks to @boomslang.records for making this release happen!
