Bea has claimed the bump and the bench. Pls enjoy this 30sec clip, cut down for 5 mins of her clingy shenanigans 🥹
Bench has been the only lift I've been able to consistently train without triggering overall discomfort or my little butt injury. Now I really am regretting not signing up for a last minute bench only meet this summer!

Progress report
July 2025: 150-155kg for singles & double (attempts) leading into World Games. Hips, glutes, and back were all janky. I missed tons of reps in prep. Ended up lifting 167.5 in comp, and missed 175 for my third (dropped near the top 😭).
January 2026: Fast forward about 6 months. 156kg-ish for an easy double.
What changed? Put in some work to get the glutes and hips feeling healthy, all the back work, and of course, a conscious bulk.

One year ago, in between preps/comps/injuries, we rolled out of bed and signed some papers. A few weeks later, after the first snowstorm of the year, we were honoured to have some friends and family from around the world join us for a little shindig to celebrate our love.
Honestly, a year of legally binding documents is so insignificant compared to the lifetime of memories we'll continue to create together.

"She's really, really happy" -
K, it's been a month, and I've still barely processed that I actually competed at the World Games. One of the commentators said the above about me after I finished a lift and he couldn't have been more spot in. I missed all of my thirds ... which would have been PRs, and I still walked away, really, really happy. Why? Because five years ago, I wanted to compete at the World Games (which at the time, only included Equipped Powerlifting) - so I put in whatever work I could to get there.
Emotional battles, grief, career, injuries, and all things LIFE were all still major priorities (and challenges) to manage, but thanks to incredible supports in my life, we got to the World Games. So yes, I'm really, really happy because life brought me to powerlifting and the weird, niche, but nonetheless loving and supportive community took me in. So here we are. A decade later, I'm still chasing PRs, still trying to weigh in heavy and still smiling as I lift.
If you made it this far, thank you!!! I owe you a cookie.
And of course, thanks to the following for their support, comradery, and good vibes:

Adventure of Abe & Sim ft @sbdcanada Aspire.
Was kind of cool to share this with gramps. The way so many other languages can add depth to a singular English word translation is just so beautiful.
Abe has always encouraged me to persevere and to put mind over matter in all that I do, so this was definitely a full circle moment.
The Aspire is an extremely limited drop and the last I checked, there are just a few more sizes left in the women's cut of this brand tshirt... pls feel free to use my athlete support link.. in bio! [Sbdapparel.ca/simone] by @simone.lai

The last Classic Worlds I competed in (2022), I came back home ready to quit.
Glad I didn't because a lot changed, and now I'm going to The World Games in 9 weeks.

Over the past few years, with the support of the homie @garrett_bentley_ , I put in some work, mentally and physically, fought through some tough meets and here we are. I'm not the person who I was in 2022 anymore, I've learned so much since then ... I'm still learning and I'm still setting some more big goals for the future.

We need goals. We need them to motivate us to do better, to change us, to push beyond what we think is our potential. A few years back, I set a scary, silly, big goal... You can even ask @s3_christine about when I dreamt up the goal to qualify for WG in equipped lifting and then how we went on a mission to find gear that would fit lil ol' me before we really even knew how to qualify. And here we are.

Start with a goal. Then do the work. Simone Lai wearing a Team Canada singlet, walking toward a barbell to deadlift. by @simone.lai

What a day.
I did not achieve my goals. I did not PR. I did not even match PR. I didn't medal a single lift, nor were we in a position to jockey for podium. While I know at a World championship, that's usually the case, we sometimes have to be realistic with the cards we are dealt.
The class is getting deeper, the injuries are recurring, and it's getting less and less desirable to have to travel and make weight at the same time.
But here's the thing... it's been a while since I've enjoyed training and since I've been excited to compete. And now I've found myself in a place where I am lifting in the moment – feeling each rep, taking each attempt, and appreciating all the work that has gone into this.
As I said, the day didn't go as I had planned or hoped, but that's how she goes. We lift, we learn, and we go lift again. The moments we "lose" are the ones that we can learn from the most. So I'll use this experience to take me further into my lifting journey. WE GOT WORLD GAMES IN AUGUST!!!

Thank you to:
The team @sbdcanada for always supporting me.
The homies @dub.c_ @afterburnbarbell
The coaches @garrett_bentley_ and @gg.grams
The nutrition @s3_christine
The rehab @quentin.chann @brighthealth.co @da.vinci.rmt
The husband @baiknbulk - from groceries to nosebleeds, this is the dream team.
And thank you to you. Whoever you are, whoever read this post, whoever keeps following me, cheering me on from wherever you may be, thanks for being on this journey with me. taken in Chemnitz, Germany by @simone.lai
