A wrong note or unexpected sound can become the beginning of something more interesting, leading the score towards a direction that could never have been planned. Simon follows those accidents when they feel connected to the emotional world of the film.

The process is led by instinct, searching for textures that belong naturally within the score and reveal something new about the character or story.

@simonfranglen on his first demo for Titanic, built around one of the film’s most dramatic moments.

Working from James Horner’s cue for the sinking sequence, Simon created an orchestral mock up while there was still uncertainty over whether the production could afford to record a live orchestra.

The funding eventually came together, allowing Horner’s score to move from the mock up into the full orchestral sound that became central to the film.

@simonfranglen and @paulthomsonmusic on the decisions that shaped Spitfire Audio Chamber Strings and the wider Symphony Orchestra range.

Simon recalls how the natural sound of the room became part of the instrument itself, captured with exceptional players, microphones and engineering rather than treated as something to remove. That sense of space gave the libraries a depth and realism he could carry directly into his demos.

Paul reflects on the choices behind the recordings, from preserving uneven dynamics and weaker notes to respecting the physical limits of the instruments. A contrabass trombone at the bottom of its range was allowed to behave like one, rather than being stretched beyond what a player could actually sustain.

Together, those details gave the libraries the variation and character of a real orchestra.

@simonfranglen on the imperfections that made Spitfire Audio libraries feel alive.

In conversation with @paulthomsonmusic, Simon reflects on hearing the original Albion recordings, one of the foundational Spitfire Audio libraries. Small shifts in intonation, the occasional squeak and the sound of players responding naturally in the room gave the samples a humanity he felt was missing from more heavily processed libraries.

Where absolute precision had often left mockups feeling artificial, those details transformed the way Simon heard sampled orchestras, preserving the character and unpredictability of a real performance.

If you’re in London on Friday night, my son Luca will be gigging at the wonderful Theatre Ship, moored at Canary Wharf. I’ll be there singing along at the back out of tune.
