Google Maps Hacks, performance, Berlin 2020.

99 second hand smartphones are transported in a handcart to generate virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. Through this activity, it is possible to turn a green street red which has an impact in the physical world by navigating cars on another route to avoid being stuck in traffic. taken in Berlin, Germany by @simonweckert

A single continuous pattern, printed across a shirt, is enough to make an AI detection system stop seeing a person standing right in front of it.

Berlin-based artist Simon Weckert built Digital Camouflage in direct response to a real deployment: AI video analysis Berlin police began piloting this August at Kottbusser Tor. The pattern works as an adversarial attack, generated through a method called TC-EGA to solve the segment-missing problem that broke earlier anti-detection patches whenever fabric folded. Worn in public, it turns bounding boxes and "person" labels into a question you can watch fail in real time.

#ProgrammKunstKI #KunstUndKI

Think AI is invincible? Think again. 🛑🤖
@simonweckert reveals the mind-blowing trick that completely breaks Artificial Intelligence: Adversarial Attacks.
Just a few invisible pixel changes or a tiny sticker is enough to trick facial recognition or completely blind a self-driving car.

📲 Send this to that one friend who thinks AI is about to take over the world. 🌍

🫥📡 @simonweckert’s Digital Camouflage uses textile patterns to trick AI surveillance cameras monitoring public space.

The garment’s hypnotic patterns cause tracking algorithms to misread human figures, rendering the wearer invisible to the machine.

Rather than promising total anonymity or evasion, @digital.camouflage.fashion acts as a wearable protest against the non-consensual automated processing of our bodies in the city.

*The Demonstrations use a generic open-source object-detection system. The work makes no claim about any specific government system, which is precisely the point, as closed surveillance networks remain impossible for the public to test.

How do AIs actually "see"? 🤖👀
@simonweckert from Digital Camouflage breaks down the basics of how the YOLO algorithm works.
YOLO = You Only Look Once. No slow, pixel-by-pixel scanning. It looks at an image once and detects objects instantly in real-time. ⚡️🔥
👇 With AI tracking moving this fast, where do we draw the line on public surveillance? Is it going too far? Let’s debate in the comments! 🛑

Simon Weckert @simonweckert likes to mess with machines

99 phones can convince Google Maps there’s a traffic jam. A patterned jacket can make you disappear from computer vision. A Bluetooth jammer can suddenly silence your headphones.
For Weckert, making technology fail is a way to understand how it works. His playful interventions “open the black box” of algorithms—and remind us that systems aren’t as objective or untouchable.

This month, Berlin switched on its first AI video surveillance at Kottbusser Tor — the first camera legally allowed to film the city's public space without any specific cause. The system is a behaviour scanner: software that sorts what every passer-by does into "normal" and "suspicious". To isolate a punch, systems like this also have to classify dancing, hugging and countless harmless gestures — everyone is read, all the time. It will raise an alarm when a person lies down; on a square that is home to many people without housing, they will trigger it simply by existing. The model used is being kept secret — no one outside can test what the software sees, misses, or gets wrong. And Kottbusser Tor is only the template: Warschauer Brücke, Alexanderplatz and Görlitzer Park are next. What does a watched square change? People before any alarm ever fires. How much trust does a system deserve that no one is allowed to examine? More on the project link in bio
