Can a piece of clothing fool AI surveillance? German designer Simon Weckert is putting computer vision to the test with Digital Camouflage, a conceptual fashion collection that challenges our growing exposure to automated computer vision systems in public spaces.

🌀Flamboyant, saturated colours and hypnotic overlapping patterns make these garments striking to the human eye. But their real target is AI: the visual-recognition systems trained to identify human figures by piecing together shapes, colours and movements.

🧠 The collection draws on the logic of an adversarial attack, manipulating the visual data a machine receives. By disrupting the contours and features that algorithms use to recognise a body, Digital Camouflage can interfere with detection — though it doesn’t guarantee invisibility.

📹 Its message goes beyond technology. Across the United States, networked cameras track vehicles and movements, raising questions about who can access this data and how it is used. As communities reconsider surveillance contracts and civil-rights groups campaign for restrictions, Weckert asks a fundamental question: who gets to read the public street?

💬 “Digital Camouflage is not a tool for evading the police, and it is not a promise of anonymity,” the designer explains. Instead, wearing it in public becomes a visible statement: being read by machines is not something everyone consents to.

🤔 And if systems that cannot be publicly tested can be disrupted by a piece of fabric, how much trust should we place in them before handing over our public spaces?

Trust the system or trick_[HACK] the system? 👁️

One question. Two perspectives. Welcome to Designer’s Choice, where designers challenge conventions and share their way of thinking.

Meet @simonweckert , a media artist exploring the relationship between technology, surveillance and public space.

His project Digital Camouflage features a garment with a hypnotic pattern designed to confuse computer-vision systems. By manipulating digital systems, Simon explores how they operate, raising questions about privacy, surveillance and control in public space.

Simon Weckert’s “Digital Camouflage” looks like a wild patterned shirt, but it was designed to confuse AI. Tested against YOLO, the pattern made the system stop recognizing him as a person while still detecting everyone around him.

Basically, a shirt designed to fool computer vision.

What can 99 smartphones in a rudimentary metal wagon reveal about the way technologies are shaping our world?

This year’s edition of In the Ether explores sanctuary technologies through art, installations, talks, and workshops, and asks how such technologies can give people greater autonomy while supporting societal wellbeing.

In the Ether — The Rise of Sanctuary Technologies runs from 3 October to 6 December 2026.

🇬🇧 “Digital Camouflage” is a wearable work from 2026 that explores how the human body is perceived by computer-vision and automated surveillance systems increasingly present in public space. Designed as a garment, its abstract, almost hypnotic pattern is intended to make it more difficult for object-recognition algorithms to identify the human body. The work was documented at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin, focusing on how behavioural and object-recognition systems used in public spaces operate.

The pattern was developed using an “adversarial attack” method that manipulates the visual data received by a machine, and was tested against YOLO-based object-detection models. In these tests, the system stopped recognising the wearer as a person, although the result can vary depending on the model, distance, angle and lighting. Through this technical intervention, “Digital Camouflage” questions what it means to be continuously read by machines in public space, and how much trust can be placed in these systems.

A shirt designed to make AI cameras look twice.

The concept uses a dense, high contrast print to interfere with computer vision systems, making the wearer harder to detect while turning an everyday garment into a conversation around digital privacy.

It is an unusual intersection of fashion, technology and surveillance, showing how design can respond to the way AI is increasingly shaping public spaces.

Can a shirt make you invisible to AI?

German designer Simon Weckert created Digital Camouflage, a shirt designed to disrupt AI-powered surveillance cameras.

It’s not really about disappearing. It’s about what happens when we start trusting machines to analyse people in public space.

A shirt humans can’t miss.
And AI just might.
