Drink Your Garden: Recipes, Stories and Tips from the Simple Goodness Cocktail Farm is available for preorder everywhere books are sold! (We are authors! 😮 We did it!!!)

With so much focus on what we eat, it feels like drinks deserve the same attention. That’s what Venise and I set out to do with Drink Your Garden— bring the same intentionality, and appreciation for flavor and seasonality that the farm to table movement is known for to the beverage world.

So many of us want to drink better, healthier, without sacrificing connection and joy. This book is here to teach you how—whether that’s crafting a great cocktail, making a zero-proof option, or simply using fresh ingredients to DIY coffee syrup.

Using my knowledge as a bartender and my sister’s as a farmer, we share over 100 recipes, from classic cocktails like the Pumpkin Spice Espresso Martini to nonalcoholic sippers like a Creamy Tea Cobbler or Lavender Honey Cordial Spritz.

Featuring 82 beautifully immersive photographs by our friend @ryleafoehlphotos and personal essays, the Drink Your Garden book is available at the links below from these retailers. Preorders are are extremely important to the success of books- we’d be so grateful if you preorder a copy!

This feels like one of those moments that’s just an email I send, and could let pass me by but… I’m going to share it with you instead. We just chose this as our official author photo. For our book. Which will be released in 2025. By a real publisher, @countrymanpress. Eight year old Belinda, who entered the annual Reflections contest at her elementary school with essays and poems, and one time got an honorable mention for a short story written about the Savage attack of our turtle doves off of the porch of our old school house by the neighboring farm’s dogs, is very proud.

This book is of a lighter subject, thank God!

It’s about drinking from your garden, and the last decade of our lives learning to craft drinks from scratch with fresh seasonal ingredients, but also about the 25 years before that, and all of the time spent eating, drinking, and growing things with people who shaped us. It’s liquid memories and dependable recipes to learn to drink from scratch. It’s cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks, preserves and pickles, syrups and spirits.

It took a year to write and 35 years to make (since the four years of Venise’s life before I was around are basically a moot point.)

I’m proud of us.

This book would also not be alive without the one who captures everything: @ryleafoehlphotos of @familieswhofarm. Her lens is magic.

After a long summer in the garden everyone is ready to put the garden to bed for winter. Yesterday Cash helped me harvest the last of the Zucchini, the cows got lots of yummy leftovers and I weeded the beds to get ready for a layer of winter mulch.

Here’s your motivation to finish strong. Every year at this time I have ZERO desire to pull another weed and prep my beds and sometimes I don’t; but when I do Spring Venise is very thankful Fall Venise dug deep and pushed through the end of season burn out. A good little tune and a dance always help!

Have you done your fall garden chores yet?

Y’all better watch out, this feed’s about to become a random collection of us dancing (poorly but without an ounce of shame) to our favorite songs whilst doing random things because in a world of curated content I think we could all use a little more spontaneous dancing, a little less shame and a lot more randomness. And to be honest, I think I’m reaching a point of midlife where I don’t really GAF anymore. #midlife #millenial #outdoorkitchen by @simplegoodnesssisters

Harvest season is in full swing! We’ve got tomatoes to turn into sauce, apples to press into cider, garlic to plant and a porch to decorate so it’s all hands on deck around here on the farm.

While I harvested the tomatoes and apples, the kids helped press cider.

I didn’t plant pumpkins in the garden this year for the porch so I grabbed one from @buckleyfeed when I was grabbing chicken feed and I tried the trend of letting my chickens take over pumpkin carving duties. Would 💯 recommend! It turned out great and the chickens got a special treat!

Have you done this?

Happy birthday to Venise, my favorite animal at an Eagles bar. In celebration, let’s do some fun facts (add your own in the comments!)

1. I chose this song because when Venise is Out, which isn’t very often these days, and seconds 15 through 30 of one of her favorite songs being played, she has an extremely specific reaction that those who are privileged enough to have witnessed, will smile reading about. This is one of those songs for her. She won’t notice it second zero through 15 cause she’s too busy talking. She is an extrovert, until she is not, and then she wants flat quiet and a sunset garden.

2. Ironically, she does not drink water. Unless it has our syrup in it.

3. She is the best dancer among us. She will out- two step, country swing, western swing, or whatever it is exactly that my dad has adapted from several traditions into one over the years, and out- TikTok dance you.

4. She can take the most complex conversations, emotions, and situations, and concentrate them down into their simplest and most true parts in a conversation. This is a gift she shares with those closest to her.

5. But if you ask her to recite any kind of a script on Camera, it will take a lot of takes.

6. She is one of those weird humans who loves black licorice, like good and plenties (This is why she loved it when I made fennelcello, and it ended up in our book, “drink your garden”. Also, Mike and Ikes. Also cinnamon bears. Pie > cake. Rice crispy treats. No bake cookies. Salty > sweet.

7. She is known by some of the little cousins as mean auntie. This is because she taught early childhood and knows an age appropriate consequence when they’re getting too feral. But she can put any baby to sleep with the five “S’s”

8. As soon as these kids stop kicking each other for no good reason and can get into an eagles club, she is going to be known as fun auntie.

9. Her dream house is a log cabin, and her perfect vacation is probably on a snowy mountain top or a sunny Ranch.

10. She is the one you call on the side of the road, or when you need a bail bondsman.

What did I leave out? What’s your favorite thing about the older, wiser sister?

This just might be our proudest mom moment yet. After 8+ years of talking about where food comes from, showing them how food is made, including them in the process of preparing food and challenging them to be intentional about the food they put into their bodies, this conversation about the fresh pressed apple cider we were making on the farm this weekend sprung up between our kids organically.

Conversations about food are important and we love that appreciation for real, healthy food is becoming a habit for our families. Knowledge about food is like anything else, it has to be taught to be learned. As mothers we take this work serious and hearing that knowledge flow from their little minds is pretty rad!

Tomato Girl Summer is over and Apple Jack Winter is coming in HAWT!

Who is ready for sweater weather and apple cider? As proud Washingtonians where we grow approximately 65% of the nations apples, we are BIG fans of what we are officially dubbing Apple Jack Winter!

On the farm we have a massive heirloom apple tree. It produces a bumper crop of apples every other year and this year was a GOOD year so we will have plenty of our Apple Pie syrup for all your Apple Pie fall drinks. Most Apple flavored drink flavorings are made with artificial apple flavors that taste NOTHING like real apples. Our syrup is always made with real apples and we promise the difference is worth it.

Join our Cocktail Farm Club or get on our mailing list to get first dibs of this syrup. When it’s gone, it’s gone. We make one batch a year!

On October third, he asked her to marry him. She said yes!

And @simplegoodnesssodashop got to be the witness and backdrop to a gorgeous Fall wedding- one more historical night in her 150+ year history.

I didn’t give a speech last night, but if I had, it would’ve said something like this : Ask any in-law and they’ll tell you, marrying into the extended Drllevich family is both a privilege and responsibility. We talk to each other constantly, we love loudly and with high expectations, we get together unceasingly, we make fun of each other unmercilessly. It’s not for everyone. But we are so so grateful that it’s for you. The way you’ve embraced our family as you’ve fallen in love with Zac has been something every Cousin, every Aunt and Uncle, and Gigi have been so happy to Witness. You are one of us now. And we love you- big, loud, and quite sarcastically.

But how could I possibly have followed up Clem’s speech? Scroll to the end to see it. It was a highlight worth the plane trip from Belgium.

Zac and @lisajean8 ‘s love for Wilkeson & their family and friends was apparent in every decision- from @carlsonblock pizza, to locally farmed flowers from @petalsandposiesflowerfarm, band @flowersforwolves , pies from @cjsdeliandcatering and an after party of karaoke at @wilkesonpick.

Since the bridge closed, we’ve both taken new jobs, and we don’t have any events booking help any longer, so we’re doing less- but last night was a reminder that this place throws a hell of a party. taken in Simple Goodness Sisters by @simplegoodnesssisters

When @oakandfigfloral wanted to do an over the top renaissance style shoot in @simplegoodnesssisters barn, I literally flew across the country and shot this on a cold, dark, rainy day with a massive light diffuser I had to rent at the last minute because it got so dark. Barns have the best light for this sort of thing, but it gets tricky when it decides to rain in Washington state! All medium format film. Beautiful drinks by @belindalkelly by @simplegoodnesssisters

When’s the last time you saw a kid on a device and walked over and said “be careful” or “you better watch out, you’re going to get hurt”?

I have had more than one parent tell me that they would be a nervous wreck if they lived on a farm where they couldn’t always see where their kids are and what they are doing. And I don’t know, maybe I’m delusional but watching my kids sit in front of a device scares me more. #raisingkids #farmkids #familyfarm by @simplegoodnesssisters

No matter what inheritance he gets later, we can give him the confidence to start something and the guidance to see it through.

A nonexhaustive list of our first businesses we had as kids, in the comments below. They were play, but they were so much more for two sisters who would grow up to be business partners.

Much thanks to @luxo_barbershop_ - the coolest place in town isn’t taking any new candy entrepreneurial ventures, that’s our spot 😉 but they do a very solid low taper fade with the textured fringe.
