My autumn book recs!!! 🎃🍂🫆

With autumn being almost here, here’s a list of books that are perfect for cozying up under a blanket, settling into your favourite armchair, or enjoying alongside a warm drink! 📚☕

Just like my previous post, I’ve tried to include a little bit of everything: thrillers, classics and fantasy. Hopefully there’s something here for every kind of reader! 🫶🏻

If I had to recommend one thing for this autumn, it would be to read gothic classics. Their brooding atmospheres always bring something wonderfully eerie and chilling and it’s the perfect mood for autumn!!!🕯️🦇

My very first book festival 📖💕

This weekend I attended my first-ever book festival: the 41st edition of La Comédie du Livre! 📚✨

Between the book stands, the meetings, the book signings and all the chats about books, I had an amazing day with my bookstagram friends 🫶

I was so happy to meet authors I hadn’t discovered yet (especially in the fantasy/sci-fi genre) 🩷🖊️ A huge thank you to everyone for their signings and kindness! I genuinely can’t wait to explore your worlds!!!

And of course, a special shoutout to the coffee breaks that kept us going throughout the day 🍵

I came home exhausted by the heat but with my head full of wonderful memories ✨📸

BOOK REVIEW: The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler 🐙🧬

This story follows the discovery of a mysterious super-intelligent octopus species. Dr. Ha Nguyen, our main protagonist and a marine biologist will do almost anything to study them and to understand what makes them so different from us.

What I loved the most about this book is how it explores the meaning of life. What does it mean to think? To communicate? To exist? And what happens when we try to answer these questions while our planet is on the edge of an environmental disaster!

Even if it took me an entire month to finish this book, it was definitely worth it! The ideas around consciousness and the meaning of language really stayed with me long after putting the book down. It also reminded me a lot of the movie Arrival, which conveys the same feeling of trying to understand an intelligence that communicates and thinks in a completely different way. If you love Arrival, you’ll definitely love this book too! 👽

To finish this review, one of the little things that made me pick up this book in the first place was the main protagonist herself! She’s of Vietnamese origin (just like me) and I loved seeing an Asian woman as the main character in a sci-fi book. It still feels too rare nowadays! 💗

BOOK REVIEW: Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia 📽️🩸

Set in the Mexican film industry of the 1990s, this story follows Montserrat, a sound editor, and Tristan, a faded soap opera star. Together, they will meet a meet a cult horror film director, and end up helping him shoot a missing scene from a cursed movie in the hope of lifting its curse.

This was such a quick and easy read that helped me to slowly getting out of my reading slump!

One thing I really loved was all the references to the occult. I actually recognised some of them because I studied the subject for my dissertation, which made the reading experience even more fun. 🔮

There are also lots of movie references throughout the book. The idea of a cursed movie was what made me pick this up in the first place, and it definitely didn’t disappoint!!!

As for the horror aspect, some passages were definitely tense, but I didn’t find them particularly scary. I wouldn’t classify it as a pure horror novel though because it focuses much more on dark magic than on horror itself!

If you love the occult and cinema, I think you’ll really enjoy this one! 🎥
