If the church is where we endure,
the park is where we exhale.

There may not be many seats at the table of white tolerance, but there are endless pews in the lands of our culture — many benches in our park.

Here, faith loosens its collar; survival learns how to laugh. In a world eager to script us against one another, the park insists otherwise. It is our commons. Our rehearsal space. Our proving ground. A sanctuary without stained glass.

Camaraderie is currency. Joy is defiance. Love moves loudly and without apology.

This is not leisure— it is infrastructure.

This is how we gather.
This is how we build.
This is how we remain.

BLACK AMERICAN GOTHIC - 01. Church

In 1930, Grant Wood painted American Gothic: a farmer with a pitchfork, a woman beside him, faces set in Midwestern stoicism. Some saw it as a tribute; others saw satire. Was it honor, or was it critique? Either way, it became the face of a time and place — a symbol of Americana etched into our imagination.

In BLACK AMERICAN GOTHIC, I turn the lens to Black rural America, reclaiming what it means to be American through our eyes, our faith, our endurance. The church has always been our anchor — a place of refuge, guidance, and quiet strength when the world turned away. The bible, our pitchfork against those against us.

Luther Barnes’ “I’m Still Holding On” was chosen intentionally for this part of the series. My grandmother said this song was like an echo of her resilience growing up in southern Virginia before migrating to Trenton, New Jersey. Today, in 2026, we too are still holding on — to faith, to pride, to the life we continue to build.
