Ay listen brah, I wrote this for you,

I wanted you to know that I love you dearly. I wanted you to know that I remember when guys cried together exactly when and how we were hoping not to. I remember how bad it feels to hurt and I remember seeing that same sorrow on you. I wrote this because we need to remember that we are not monsters. We are beautiful beings brah, we are beautiful. We are not monsters. We don’t get to be as simple and uncomplicated as monsters, brah. We change and we must continue to.
I wrote this thinking about the mandem. My guys on the rock, my guys in the city, my guys too far away for one flight, my guys among the ancestors. I wrote this about Palestine, Sudan and Congo. I wrote this about Bermuda, Toronto and London. I wrote this about Tanzania. I wrote this about you, brah.
In one of these shots, we stood on the roof of a parking garage. I stood and talked about when I would stand there and wonder if this was high enough to take me out. We were beside the dorm-room where I tried to do it myself. I remember how that felt and I wanted to be free, thinking I had seen the sun for the last time; how I hadn’t felt right since the Last Time I seen the sun, thinking I’d never see her again. But now I see the sun every day.
So I shed every big boy tear that grows big enough to well in my eyes. And I do it with you, bro, for the sun, stars and moon to see. So, thank you for allowing me to cry with you.
Love you like life brah. by @sion.amir

🏝️ BERMUDA 🏝️  Join us May 14th, 15th, or 16th for a fringe theatre production, “Babylon Cya Stop We Music”.  TICKETS AVAILABLE ON LOQUATSHOP.COM

After months overseas three bredrens link up and sit off down Clearwater beach Bermuda to unpack their respective experiences while out in foreign. The drinks pour, the laughs grow and the conversation deepens, reaching a conundrum when the question of Babylon arises prompting guys to ask themselves and one another “What is Babylon?”

Exploring Blackness, Masculinity, Queerness, Community, Bermudian-ness and belonging, Babylon Cya Stop We Music asks how the colloquial Babylon, as popularized in Rastafari culture, serves contemporary Afro-Caribbean folks and culture in maintaining community or challenging identity.”

Show starts at 7PM on each night ✨ Tickets are $5-$30 available on sliding scale, and are in our bio 🎟️  TICKETS AVAILABLE ON LOQUATSHOP.COM

“A Poem for my Big Brother Marcus”

My longest friendship is 23 years old. Ni that’s crazy inna? I’ve had the privilege of connecting with incredible people who by chance became my brothers, whether that back in the day and just the other day (relatively). I could never put a price on having friends that move more like siblings. If you met me in Canada you probably met Sy at the same time. Between 2019 and 2022 we were at York at the same time, the rest is history. But I also met him when I was 9 years old back when we all lived in Bermuda full time. Like most families we’ve been through ups and downs, but like the best families what’s never changed is our ability to rely on one another. I’ve been blessed to have a brother like Sy, and like all my brothers I got him covered 4L. So when things get rough, I’m reminded to look at his words:

“My brother in the harsh lovelessness of these spaces it becomes reflexive to understand this suffering as natural and necessary. Your ancestors, your lineage, our people have disproven this over endless lifetimes and shown the incredible power of hope and imagination. So remain hopeful, and imagine radically in the exact radical tradition that we were born” taken in Toronto, Ontario by @sion.amir

African Herbsman, seize your time!

breezing through Morocco with my mumma then my friends has left with me so so so many thoughts.

thoughts about tourism as (neo)colonialism, thoughts about my positionality as a Black Westerner while on the continent that my ancestors came from but maybe not a country that my peoples were in, thoughts about tourist economies and how they create sites of figurative/literal/spiritual/physical violence and violation against indigenous peoples, thoughts about “ethical” tourism and challenging an extractive model (shouts to Keith for the language and Jordan for emphasising the importance of relationships and meaningful connection as a huge way to challenge this), thoughts about complicity!! and protest!! and members of my generation being the vanguard for change in their home while i’m somewhere in a nearby desert or the market haggling over some sandals!! thoughts about contemporary mainstream (Bermudian) culture and the flaunting of privilege to imitate/access luxury or affluence, SO many thoughts about Orientalism and exoticism and the dehumanisation of peoples in the polite tradition of the noble s*vage stereotype (“they don’t have much, but they’re just so happy here; why can’t we be more grateful like these *simple people*?”) thoughts about cultural relativity and how easy it is to overstep and project a value set, thoughts about community and connection and art and perception and hair and clothing and LANGUAGE!!

so so so many thoughts and an incredible lack of conclusions!

shouts to the good folks around me that translated, invited, drove, listened, planned, jested and shared with me this experience🫶🏽 taken in Morocco, North Africa by @sion.amir

so, natty is dread?

here’s something i wrote for myself, for my love of meaning, for what hope i salvage from hard days, for my love of the pairing of courage and creativity, for the sake of beginning with a refusal, for the sake of my small axe and for my Uncle Timmy:

People Freedom and Liberty
is the only power for which I sing.
For the sake of Black babies
chasing chickens through banana patches
fastening lizard catchers
“Don’t choke him! He’s just a little guy!”
Waging war with our freedom songs,
rebel in the morning, maroons among mangroves
in midday, amid night
Telling the truth of humming drum
“We’ve been trampled on, for much too long.”
