Sky Study with Leviathan (Hellraiser: Revival), 20x20cm, Oil on Aluminium.

A spooky Halloween painting from the new Hellraiser game. I’ve always been a fan of Clive Barker’s work, and I’m thoroughly impressed with this game—its easily the best thing to happen to the series in a long time. Anyway, here’s a fun piece taken from the game with gorgeous skies and an incredibly realised labyrinth.

I thought that Paynes Grey would be a winner for this painting, but turns out old Prussian Blue was the real MVP.

Working on more Red Dead Redemption vs Art History paintings. This one’s a little study for a take on Turner’s Rain, Steam, and Speed. Kinda happy how it worked out and good to be back painting the Red Dead world again.

20x20cm, Oil on Canvas.

One for the painters here:

About a year or so ago I started mixing yellow into the ground for priming canvases. I’ve had a go at all kinds of stuff in the past (including bare canvas and various non-vegan glues!) and I found adding a little pigment helps push certain colours without having to make too many palette adjustments.

This is good for me because I like to keep it tight colour wise, and I know how my colours work with each other really well. I can generally get what I want with maybe 3 or 4 paints.

I’ve played around with different materials and base colours (anodising aluminium or using copper, etc.) as well, this is just the same approach but with canvas. Different colour grounds can give drastically different results with the same paints. Maybe part of it is psychological!

Anyway, my favourite yellow is Yellow Ochre and I very sparingly use anything brighter. I’m also a big fan of Michael Harding paints and the yellow tends to be the most expensive one! So why waste precious pigment when the canvas can do the legwork for me?

Pop into @grangetown_studios tomorrow for our open day. There’s plenty of fun stuff going on throughout the day and lots of art to see. I’ve even given my space a bit of a clean up and put up some paintings.

There’s gonna be a raffle to raise money for Cardiff food bank too where you could win a chance to get your hands on this little Red Dead Redemption landscape painting (last pic) ➡️➡️➡️

Still-life with Paint Can & Plant, Oil on Board, 20x20cm.

I used to do lots of still-life paintings, one of my favourite things to paint. This one is fairly recent but I haven’t posted it on here yet.

On a recent trip to the @museumwales with @emilycnorton I found this amazing little Morandi (swipe to see) who was always my main inspiration for this kind of painting. I loved seeing his wonky brushwork, not a straight line in the entire painting up close.

I thought it would be nice to share one of my takes on the still-life genre, taken from a photo from an old shed in Ireland that had become slightly overgrown. I’m still making these kinds of paintings, maybe this will be part of a larger body of work—found objects from everyday life in rural Ireland.

Border Bus Stop, The Glebe, Northern Ireland, Oil on Gold-Anodised Aluminium, 40x30cm.

A landscape within a landscape, this painting is from a few miles near where I grew up. The Glebe is one of several ‘Glebes’ from around Ireland and the UK. I had a blast making this even though it’s probably more architecture than I like to include in my paintings.

Swipe for some details and studio pics ✨✨✨

Lego Twelfth Migrant Bonfire (Computer Render).

With the annual riot season starting early and the recent events in Belfast, I thought it might be worth sharing a small project I’d been working on from this time last year.

This piece was a response to a shocking bonfire in Northern Ireland last year that featured an effigy of a boat on top. I’ve been interested in how kids who grew up in the post-Good Friday Agreement world have since been conditioned to follow the same old ways of hate, violence, and intimidation.

In past projects, I looked at using tools like video games to approach this subject, but I had been experimenting with some Lego software to create 3D renders, using something simple, relatable, and virtuous to create a sickening visual description of the inherent problems resurfacing in Northern Irish communities.

Irish border Landscape, Stranorlar, Oil on Aluminium, 40x40cm.

There’s some gorgeous landscape around the Donegal/Tyrone border. The thin grey line of road at the bottom of the painting is something I’ve nicked from Neil Shawcross (he uses a similar technique to ground his portraiture). He also told me he got the idea from watching kids paint—they always start with a line at the bottom and work up from there.

Sky Study (Clady Border), Oil on Gold-Anodised Aluminium, 10x10cm, £50.

These little paintings are always fun to do and invite some different challenges to painting at this scale.

The border checks at the army base in Clady form some core childhood memories for me—it’s nice to see it back as a sleepy border town without the usual drama these days.
