I haven’t seen the Aurora Borealis in many years, but I hope to have that experience again someday.

This is my childhood home in Los Angeles. So far it is still standing.

At the moment, I am not deleting my Instagram account, but I am putting a pause on it, while I ponder what I want to do.

Instagram has been a wonderful tool for me, in so many ways. I have had visual exposure to a range or artwork and techniques that nourish me. I have discovered opportunities to learn, to participate in meaningful 100 day projects, to ask questions, and to celebrate the achievements of others.

For me, there are also downsides. I question how I can use a platform that is owned by someone whose world view and values don’t align with mine. The moral aspect of this is gnawing at me. Lesser issues are also bothering me…. I see people, both young and old, who seem to derive meaning, validation, and a sense of self-worth based on numbers of followers. The app itself is meant to be addictive; it is meant to become a substitute for real validation in the real world. It isn’t sitting well with me right now, as so much of what I hold dear seems to be vanishing.

So, I’m not sure if this is a time out for me, or whether I will delete my account altogether. I need time to think. Maybe that will be easier to do when the last wild fire is extinguished in the city that allowed me to have a magical childhood. Or maybe, In just over a week, I will know even more clearly that I need to live my values.

To friends and to people whose work I admire, I am not ignoring you. I am just not checking Instagram. Find other ways to let me know what you are doing. by @siouxxxx
