Anthony Peyton Young

Toni Morrison: Flight
Freedom Quilt: Bow Tie
Ceramic vessels
2026

Young’s ceramic vessels draws inspiration from Grotesque
jars and face jugs, focusing on their historical
legacy as functional vessels, grave markers for
enslaved ancestors, and sacred objects used to ward
off evil. While these jugs were traditionally thought
to be self-portraits, Young’s vessels represent both
himself and other individuals in his life, such as
his mother and close friends who provide him refuge
and the space to be his full self.

A recurring icon in Young’s work is the rock dove, a
creature that defies displacement and refuses to let
others dictate its presence. Central to Young’s
visual language is the color blue, which he uses as a
literal and conceptual extension of Blackness—evoking
skin so deep it takes on a luminous blue hue, while
also connecting to water and the cosmos.

Young’s vessel “Toni Morrison: Flight” converses with
Toni Morrison’s insistence on the conjuring of flight
in Song of Solomon and Imani Perry’s brilliant usage
of the bluejay. In reflection with the usage of salt
as a material that can weigh you down, Young’s work
insists otherwise.

Come witness Anthony’s work in our current exhibit, Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies!
Dates: August 8th - September 6th (viewing on the weekends and by appointment)

Ingrid Raphaël

Buried Under Water, I Remember -
Enterré Sous l’Eau, Je Me Souviens
Textile, Canvas, Raffia, Flower, Paper, Leather, Cyanotype, Ink
2026

Inspired by Ingrid Raphaël’s research on the ecological
radicalized topographies in Philadelphia: following the history
of buried streams between the late 1800s to 1960s that form
Philadelphia’s present-day underground sewage system. This part of history results in flooding across neighborhoods in
predominantly Black and Brown neighborhoods, where rainwater overflows the underground sewage tunnels, therefore reverting back to where it remembers to flow: its memory streams. As Toni Morrison situated water’s memory similar to the roles of writers, quoting “You know, they straightened out the Mississippi River in places, to make room for hours and livable acreage. Occasionally the river floods these places. “Floods” is the word they use, but in fact it is not flooding; it is remembering. Remembering where it used to be. All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.”

Ingrid Raphaël situates themselves as the buried rivers, revisionist engineers as self-criticism, blurred layers challenging memories’s truths, and burial as a violent site and one of excavational discovery. Using architectural and engineering graphing transparency paper, archival photographs and plans of stream burials, fabric, and photographs, Raphaël immerses in a layered collage and experience of traversing through layers of our landscapes to be rewarded with the interiority of the self — suspended, and visible unlike the waters buried under racialized topographies.

Come witness Ingrid’s work in our current exhibit, Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies!

@sipcurationco__ heads to New Orleans to present

Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies, a first presentation in an evolving inquiry! A three-artist exhibition on place, memory, and the practice of getting well.

In conversation with Toni Cade Bambara’s 1980 novel, The Salt Eaters, spiritual in form and political in tone, the exhibition asks a question the novel poses in its opening line: “Are you sure, sweetheart, that you want to be well?”. Like the material and rememory of salt, Black Spiritual Ecologies as a framework layers Black spiritual meaning-making across past, present, and future ecologies. It invites artists and audiences alike into collaboration with materiality, placemaking, storytelling, and the global political conditions of Black life.

Focusing on the pillar of place, each artist converses with the history and spiritual making of a place/places; whether on the ground or in the air. All places that refuse to be forgotten. As a collective story, the artists represent the layering of mediums as a methodology for meaning making. Individually, each artist’s work represents methods for getting well; through flying, portals, or community remembrance, Black life is honored.

- Cheyenne Wyzzard-Jones @cheyennewj

Presented at The Front, 4100 St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans’s Bywater
August 8 – September 6, 2026
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 8, 6–10 PM

Tending to the art 2025 Recap part 2 đŸŒ»

I have always been committed to sharing stories. And I have always been committed to understanding different ways those stories are told. I traveled a lot to be in conversation with other educators, artists, and curators last year, and it continues with a level of attention to our current world. Here are some of my highlights. by @sipcurationco__

Tending to the art of world-buildingđŸŒ»

Dawoud Bey has a title in his beautiful recent solo exhibition, “Night Coming Tenderly, Black”. I love this title. There is so much to the making of that title, including Langston Hughes 1926 poem, Dream Variations. It speaks to fugitivity in a way I have been deeply reflecting on: when it comes to my own and all my people’s making of refusal.

The background of my life right now (when not tending to full time work) has been curatorial research & writing. And it not being outside of my dedication to respond to, organize against, & be of witness to never forget genocide. The stark illusion that everything is fine and beautiful when most people right now are needing emergency support is hard to witness. In this round of photos (see comments): by @sipcurationco__

The process is just as important as the final result! Black Shedding(s) has been nothing but a beautiful communal experience! Over the past month from install to now the closing ceremony, we have centered what it means to be in a communal process of making art as a spiritual experience rooted in the foundations of our ancestors. The conversations, workshops, and gatherings have been everything and more!

Please join us for a final ceremony of laughter, music, and a closing reflective meditation led by @ehimeora 💕 July 10th 6pm - 8pm at the Longwood Art Gallery in the Bronx, NY.

Let’s close out Black Shedding(s) right! Look forward to seeing you! đŸŒ»đŸȘ¶đŸđŸ’— taken in Longwood Art Gallery At Hostos by @sipcurationco__

Please join us at The Longwood Art Gallery, Wednesday June 26th for our public programming, A Hair Journey through Black Remembrance.
This panel will feature Black Shedding(s) curator @cheyennewj , Black Shedding(s) exhibiting artist @convhersations_ , and Mane Move Media Founder and Chief Empowerment Officer @natashagaspard

In this interactive performance and conversation, the audience is invited to discuss the history of Black hair in the United States, the fibers of hair within the field of artmaking, and reflect on creative imaginations for where the collective Black hair journey is taking us toward liberatory transformation. This event echos themes within Black Shedding(s), an exhibition that brings the audience through various processes of a shedding transformation. Through a shedding process that most Black people have been forced to move through, it becomes evident to attribute one's hair journey to that process.

During the discussion, exhibiting artist tasha dougé’s performance allows attendees to witness the production of the second edition of Justice, a sculpture made with braiding hair. She shares, "I specifically chose kinky hair because Black hair is undeniable and easily recognizable.

We look forward to seeing you at this powerful public program. Use the first link in our bio to register! by @sipcurationco__

THANK YOU to everyone who came out, sent love, and supported the opening of Black Shedding(s)! I am beyond grateful to have @sipcurationco__ first in person exhibition receive so much love. I am in deep gratitude for my community, it would not have been possible without me saying people need this & you showing up to receive it! To the artists, the level of gratitude cannot be explained. We did it!

I am a learner & storyteller who wants our knowledge and narratives to be visualized and embodied. I appreciate the trust in me to make that real. Our liberation is connected & the shedding to get there is happening. This is really the beginning to so much more, follow @sipcurationco__ to stay updated!
