We are open today from 12-5. A closer look at some of the miniature sculptures in Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies, by @anthonypeytonyoung. This is an exhibit held in Room 2 of our gallery, with artist Ingrid Raphaël, Darryl DeAngelo Terrell, Anthony Peyton Young, Installation by Déja Jones, & curated by SIP, Spiritual is Political @sipcurationco__

It is a multimedia installation, ceramic, wheat-pasted imagery, textile, photography, audio, wood, glass. On view until September 6th.

From Sip Curation:

Introduction: Black Spiritual Ecologies, a first presentation in an evolving inquiry! A three-artist exhibition on place, memory, and the practice of getting well.

In conversation with Toni Cade Bambara’s 1980 novel, The Salt Eaters, spiritual in form and political in tone, the exhibition asks a question the novel poses in its opening line: “Are you sure, sweetheart, that you want to be well?” Like the material and rememory of salt, Black Spiritual Ecologies as a framework layers Black spiritual meaning-making across past, present, and future ecologies. It invites artists and audiences alike into collaboration with materiality, placemaking, storytelling, and the global political conditions of Black life.

Focusing on the pillar of place, each artist converses with the history and spiritual making of a place/places; whether on the ground or in the air. All places that refuse to be forgotten. As a collective story, the artists represent the layering of mediums as a methodology for meaning making. Individually, each artist’s work represents methods for getting well; through flying, portals, or community remembrance, Black life is honored.

About SIP:
Spiritual is Political (SIP) is an independent curatorial studio whose practice centers art, education, organizing for resistance, and world-building. SIP produces, examines, and builds alongside contemporary artists and their communities.

Tending to the art 2025 Recap part 2 🌻

I have always been committed to sharing stories. And I have always been committed to understanding different ways those stories are told. I traveled a lot to be in conversation with other educators, artists, and curators last year, and it continues with a level of attention to our current world. Here are some of my highlights.

I have been invited to take part in a special panel discussion Wednesday, June 26th, from 6PM - 8PM at the Longwood Art Gallery @hostoscollege! It is part of a group exhibition called Black Shedding(s) where each artist’s work comes together to tell a collective story. Through visual art, sound production, literary reflections, and educational resources, the viewer is invited into their own contemplation and conversation about diverse quests for liberatory transformation.

I will be joining the curator Cheyenne Wyzzard-Jones @cheyennewj alongside artist tasha dougé @convhersations_ for “A Hair Journey Through Black Remembrance.”

In this interactive performance and conversation, the audience is invited to discuss the history of Black hair in the United States, the fibers of hair within the field of artmaking, and reflect on creative imaginations for where the collective #Blackhair journey is taking us toward liberatory transformation.

I know this conversation will be powerful because when The Tasha’s come together its pure 🔥! We are two powerhouses who are not afraid to take it the conversation where it needs to go!

If you’re interested in hearing truth spoken unapologetically and fully undergirded with love and Afrofuturstic envisioning, then this is the conversation for you because we will be BRINGING IT…ok!

RSVP for “A Hair Journey through Black Remembrance | Black Shedding(s)” using the link in our bio!

What happens when an invitation to BE in an exhibition evokes and calls into reality a period of shedding. In this space, I will share some of my most vulnerable moments, speak to some hard truths, and talk about the day I "died" in 2023. I'm in gratitude that I will be doing this in the company of two amazing Black Women. On June 26, I will offer up an opportunity to witness my transformation.

THANK YOU to everyone who came out, sent love, and supported the opening of Black Shedding(s)! I am beyond grateful to have @sipcurationco__ first in person exhibition receive so much love. I am in deep gratitude for my community, it would not have been possible without me saying people need this & you showing up to receive it! To the artists, the level of gratitude cannot be explained. We did it!

I am a learner & storyteller who wants our knowledge and narratives to be visualized and embodied. I appreciate the trust in me to make that real. Our liberation is connected & the shedding to get there is happening. This is really the beginning to so much more, follow @sipcurationco__ to stay updated!

Black Shedding(s) is open until July 10th at The Longwood Art Gallery.

Black Shedding(s) is a group exhibition that came into cultivation during the gathering, processing, and embodying of what it takes to shed a world that can no longer be. Black Shedding(s) is a story, showcasing the processes and experiences when in search of creating new worlds. Each Artists’ work is a reflection of the shedding process for liberatory transformation, centering the history of the lands we call home and the imagination for what is already here.

It is not a new statement for me to say Free Palestine. And for that statement to be one that understands the global system of violence we are seeing throughout the world. However, it has been months of not knowing what I could possibly say/write/do/offer that will appropriately display the deep love, rage, truly expansive thoughts & opinions I have had about our world lately. There is an unveiling I am witnessing. I am appreciative of those who have spoken up against the way we have seen people choosing profit over lives. If you are making art without being in tuned with the world around you, you are just making whatever it is for you. Keep that, we don’t want it. I am appreciative of those who are choosing to still make art during a time of the world shifting & people waking up. I am curious to work with those who have been listening. I am appreciative of those who have joined on the frontlines of mass action against genocide. Please continue, we must force them to stop this erasure. Starting my journey in mass action organizing is a part of what brought me to where I am today, in rage. Around the world we have witnessed each and every day people being killed. There is something deeply forever engraved into our collective psyche. I am appreciative of those who have chosen to lay down and grieve. Who have had honest somatic responses to genocide that have left a lot of us without hope. Those who have been non stop in their beds crying and reposting, Thank You! That was what was asked of us, at the minimum we all should be doing if engaging online. Art is not just about making but witnessing, being honest about what is in the present. Pushing through is not for everyone. So much is brewing for me, and I am waiting for the moments to reveal it layer by layer. The world is changing, and so am I.

I am so thankful to be writing again!! The first editorial piece I am writing for @sipcurationco__ came out of my reflections going back to Jamaica this month. I went to Jamaica as my full queer self. I am thankful to have a platform to share how these moments tie into my work as an arts curator and educator. I love what I do.

Thank you @staceyannchin and @kindredontherock for hosting us! Thank you to my friends who I have mentioned in this article who have given me tools, language, space to reflect (@bruisingutopia @anyanwu3 @dopegirlfresh) even without you intentionally knowing that’s what you did. I am grateful to offer this on the last day of Pride Month 🌈

I really hope you enjoy and engage! These pictures are my own experiences but in the article I go in depth about space making, place building, and curation.
