At just 16 years old, Elle was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

What followed were years of treatment, hospital stays, and countless challenges—but Elle never stopped moving forward. She graduated high school, started college while still in treatment, maintained a 4.0 GPA, and continues to achieve the goals she set for herself.

Today, Elle is 19 and in remission, knowing her diagnosis is only one part of her story. As Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, we’re proud to share Elle’s story and celebrate how far she’s come—and all that’s still ahead. 💛 by @siuhospital

Shirley Hanna, MD, didn’t have one defining moment when she knew she wanted to become a doctor. Instead, she was drawn to a career that combined critical thinking and compassion to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. What actually happens during a laryngeal examination? 👀🎤

Speech-language pathologist, Frizzi Linck, takes us inside the voice box and explains how specialists evaluate the vocal folds before a patient begins voice therapy. Using a small flexible scope, the team can see how the vocal folds move during breathing, speaking and other vocal tasks.

This simple but important exam helps determine the cause of hoarseness and guides the next steps in voice therapy and treatment.
