Under his leadership, the hospital expanded services in cancer care, rehabilitation, behavioral health, advanced surgery, and community-based outpatient care through the Richmond Health Network. Dr. Messina also played a key role in advancing coordinated, community-focused healthcare across the borough. His 12-year tenure at RUMC leaves a lasting legacy of leadership, service, and commitment to improving the health and well-being of Staten Islanders. Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, she has served as an attending physician at RUMC for nearly 15 years. Some good news for Staten Island, and this time, it’s not just another study, another promise, or another press conference about what government might do someday. We’re delivering! I joined my colleagues in the Staten Island City Council delegation to announce more than $5 million in additional funding for Staten Island University Hospital, secured in partnership with Council @speakermenin. That includes $4 million for much-needed improvements at SIUH’s South Shore campus in Prince’s Bay, including upgrades to the Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, and other patient care areas. Another $1.25 million will help expand medical services at the North Shore campus. When you or someone you love is having a medical emergency, the last thing you should have to worry about is whether your local hospital has the facilities it needs to provide the best possible care. Staten Islanders pay the same taxes as everyone else. We deserve the same first-class healthcare. And for those of us on the South Shore, SIUH isn’t just another hospital. It’s OUR hospital. It’s where we turn when it matters most. I’m particularly proud that this investment was made possible by Democrats and Republicans working together. Council Members David Carr, Kamillah Hanks, Speaker Menin, and I don’t agree on everything. But we certainly agree that Staten Islanders deserve their fair share. And to the doctors, nurses, and other hospital employees who take care of our families every day, often in the middle of the night, our job in government is to make sure you have what you need to do yours. Less political finger-pointing. More working together. And more results for Staten Island. That’s what yesterday was all about.

Kudos to Marion Foley, RN, our very own wonderful VP of Clinical Care for the SIUH Dept. of Pediatrics and the whole team who organized the Near and Far Animal Foundation’s puppy adoption event at SIUH! As a pediatrician, I often see how pets enrich a child’s life, fostering empathy and providing joyful companionship. This event certainly brought a taste of that to our team members (myself included) for a few hours yesterday. It was so much fun cuddling these adorable and adoptable puppies!

Shirley Hanna, MD, didn’t have one defining moment when she knew she wanted to become a doctor. Instead, she was drawn to a career that combined critical thinking and compassion to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. As the associate chair of radiology at @SIUHospital/@NorthwellHealth and the director of the Northwell Breast Imaging Center at Mason Avenue in #StatenIsland, Dr. Hanna works to address gaps in healthcare by promoting awareness and strengthening patient-centered communication and coordination among the breast care team. What actually happens during a laryngeal examination? 👀🎤 Speech-language pathologist, Frizzi Linck, takes us inside the voice box and explains how specialists evaluate the vocal folds before a patient begins voice therapy. Using a small flexible scope, the team can see how the vocal folds move during breathing, speaking and other vocal tasks.
