In 1968, Dr. Tommie Smith and Dr. John Carlos raised their fists on the Olympic medal stand, making history and reminding the world that sports can be a powerful platform for justice and equality.

At City Hall, we’re carrying that legacy forward through inclusive hiring in SJPD, efforts to end poverty in the Mayfair neighborhood, and standing up for our community’s values by signing onto lawsuits against the Trump administration.

Alongside @sj_aacsa and @sjsu, our city came together to honor these Living Legends. We're working towards a San José where everyone feels valued, supported, and has the opportunity to live the American Dream. by @sj_aacsa

60 YEARS OF POWER, PURPOSE & COMMUNITY! ✊🏾🖤

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, founded in Oakland, California, in 1966. Rooted in the fight against racial injustice, the Party became nationally recognized for its commitment to community empowerment, self-determination, and survival programs that addressed the needs of Black communities.

From the Free Breakfast for Children Program to community health initiatives, the Black Panther Party left a lasting impact on the history of the Bay Area and the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.

As we reflect on six decades of this legacy, AACSA honors the history, courage, and community-centered work that continue to shape our collective story. 🖤

On October 14, the African American Community Service Agency (AACSA) had the honor of celebrating Tommie Smith and John Carlos Day at San José State University! ✊🏾

The day was filled with powerful conversations, inspiration, and reflections on the legacy of activism, leadership, and representation in sports.

Dr. John Carlos joined AACSA Leadership Academy students Ma’Kayla Akin, SJSU Associated Students President, and Lyric Lubin, SJSU Black Student Union President, for a meaningful conversation about activism, advocacy, and the continued impact of the Olympic Project for Human Rights.

Women in Sports Panel: We were honored to hear from an incredible panel featuring two-time Olympian Tianna Madison, WNBA Executive Bethany Donaphin, and Track & Field student-athlete Morgan Hall as they shared their experiences and perspectives on leadership and the future of women in sports.

Thank you to Assemblymember Ash Kalra and Assemblymember Issac Bryan for helping close out this impactful day with powerful remarks.

AACSA is grateful to everyone who helped make this celebration meaningful and continue the legacy of Tommie Smith and John Carlos. Their courageous stand reminds us that sports can be a powerful platform for social change, and that the work of advocating for justice and equality continues today.

The legacy lives on. The movement continues. ✊🏾🖤💛

🎶 A Little Music, A Lot of Magic! ✨

What a beautiful morning at AACSA’s Open Library in San Jose! 🌈💚

Little Roots Studio brought Finding the Music Through Sensory Play to life through storytelling, movement, rhythm, and hands-on sensory exploration! 🥁🌱

One of the most special moments was sharing a storytime reading of Rain Has a Beat, written by my talented twin sister, Mahini Adams! 📖❤️ Bringing her beautiful story to life through the work I love made this experience even more meaningful.

A heartfelt thank you to the African American Community Service Agency (AACSA), an organization dedicated to empowering families through education, cultural enrichment, and community connection. We’re grateful to have been part of their Open Library program, which celebrates literacy and learning! 📚✨

Thank you to all the little explorers and families who joined us!

Today, SJSU students joined the legendary John Carlos for a meaningful panel discussion on courage, resilience and the responsibility to help create a better future. 🌟

Legacy Day honors the example set by @sjsualumni and Olympians John Carlos, Tommie Smith and other changemakers whose work, perseverance and unwavering spirit continue to inspire multiple generations. Their stories remind students that the legacies they inherit are also legacies they have the power to carry forward.

As we celebrate those who paved the way, we are reminded of the purpose behind our own efforts. Carlos’ wisdom reminds us that the future belongs to those who lead with purpose, stand with courage and keep moving forward.

AACSA Leadership Academy Cohort 9 students visited the County of Santa Clara Supervisor Sylvia Arenas’ District 1 Office for an engaging evening focused on civic leadership, public service, and local government.

During the visit, students participated in a student-led conversation with Supervisor Arenas, moderated by AACSA Leadership Academy student Kiaya Huff. The discussion gave high school and college students an opportunity to ask questions, learn about county leadership, and gain insight into how local government serves and advocates for the community.

Students also participated in a guided tour of the County Government Center, gaining firsthand exposure to a professional environment where decisions impacting their communities are made.

Experiences like these are central to AACSA’s Leadership Academy, which empowers young people to build leadership skills, expand their networks, and explore pathways to civic engagement and professional growth.

AACSA extends its gratitude to Supervisor Sylvia Arenas and the District 1 team for investing in the next generation of leaders and creating meaningful opportunities for our students. by @sj_aacsa

Last week, my office hosted the African American Community Service Agency’s Leadership Academy Cohort 9 to discuss the importance of civic engagement and how young people of color will shape the future of Santa Clara County.

It was a blessing to connect with such an engaged cohort of young high schoolers and college students, showing that community impact is never singular – it is constant and full of opportunities to make a difference.

I’m honored to support ALA’s Cohort 9 with a budget inventory grant to remind young people that they matter, their voices are important – and they are loved.

Thank you @milan_balinton, @jeremiah_lineberger and @sj_aacsa for inspiring the next generation of leaders and changemakers ❤️ taken in 70 West Hedding by @sj_aacsa
