In 1968, Dr. Tommie Smith and Dr. John Carlos raised their fists on the Olympic medal stand, making history and reminding the world that sports can be a powerful platform for justice and equality.

At City Hall, we’re carrying that legacy forward through inclusive hiring in SJPD, efforts to end poverty in the Mayfair neighborhood, and standing up for our community’s values by signing onto lawsuits against the Trump administration.

Alongside @sj_aacsa and @sjsu, our city came together to honor these Living Legends. We're working towards a San José where everyone feels valued, supported, and has the opportunity to live the American Dream.

Today is Smith & Carlos Day in the City of San José.

In 1968, Spartans Dr. Tommie Smith and Dr. John Carlos raised their fists on the Olympic medal stand in Mexico City, a stand for human rights that still inspires the pursuit of justice, equality, and peace.

Last night, Spartan Athletics welcomed both legends to the Habbas Law Athletic Center for dinner and a fireside chat with our student-athletes, moderated by Olympic champion Coach Tianna Madison and Coach Charles Ryan. It was an evening of stories, lessons, and passing the baton to the next generation of Spartans.

Thank you, Dr. Smith and Dr. Carlos, for your courage and for continuing to show up for our campus community and beyond!

🎶 A Little Music, A Lot of Magic! ✨

What a beautiful morning at AACSA’s Open Library in San Jose! 🌈💚

Little Roots Studio brought Finding the Music Through Sensory Play to life through storytelling, movement, rhythm, and hands-on sensory exploration! 🥁🌱

One of the most special moments was sharing a storytime reading of Rain Has a Beat, written by my talented twin sister, Mahini Adams! 📖❤️ Bringing her beautiful story to life through the work I love made this experience even more meaningful.

A heartfelt thank you to the African American Community Service Agency (AACSA), an organization dedicated to empowering families through education, cultural enrichment, and community connection. We’re grateful to have been part of their Open Library program, which celebrates literacy and learning! 📚✨

Thank you to all the little explorers and families who joined us!

Last week, my office hosted the African American Community Service Agency’s Leadership Academy Cohort 9 to discuss the importance of civic engagement and how young people of color will shape the future of Santa Clara County.

It was a blessing to connect with such an engaged cohort of young high schoolers and college students, showing that community impact is never singular – it is constant and full of opportunities to make a difference.

I’m honored to support ALA’s Cohort 9 with a budget inventory grant to remind young people that they matter, their voices are important – and they are loved.

Thank you @milan_balinton, @jeremiah_lineberger and @sj_aacsa for inspiring the next generation of leaders and changemakers ❤️
