Your Exotic Ideas Will Lead You To Many Exciting New Adventures is the first exhibition in NZ since 2012 by Melbourne-based Aotearoa artist Elsa Thorp.

Comprising six large-format sculpture-photographs and a site-specific botanical installation, the exhibition showcases Thorp’s passion for nature’s unpredictable forms and the therapeutic benefits of crafting with, and contemplating works made from, organic materials.

Elsa Thorp reconfigures local flora into idealised compositional forms. She immerses herself in botanical materials in a creative process that blurs the distinction between the forms of the plants and the work of the artist. In doing so, her works invite us to question what constitutes nature — and whether we should consider ourselves part of it — and art’s relationship to it.
Thorp is passionate about supporting all things local. Her process involves sourcing seasonal materials from local markets, direct from farms and a bit of foraging. She values her relationships with farmers and growers, visiting their beautiful properties and local stores to source material for her art.
The hunt for unusual materials gives her sculptural work a temporal quality, as its ultimate configuration cannot be known until the very last minute. The photographic renderings of these sculptures seeks to make the temporal permanent.

Pics and clips from the Joyriders exhibition opening, book launch and artist talk @skar_image_lab on my last weekend in Aotearoa.

Thank you to everyone who came along, particularly those that travelled from outside Tāmaki Makaurau to make it. So wonderful to spend time together, talking about the joyous and energetic impact of @petrolettes 🏁

An enormous thank you to Sanji for the beautiful prints and sharing space; to @studiokatiekerr for her boundless enthusiasm and encouragement; and to @bruceconnew and @studiocatherine, my forever support crew 🩵

The show is on until June 26, do swing by if you’re in the neighbourhood. Prints and books available for purchase in person at Skar, or online via @gloria__books 📕 taken in Skar Image Lab by @skar_image_lab

Designed this (not so) scientific 35mm resolution chart and got it printed at @skar_image_lab in A0. Ridiculously fine detail in the print. Apparently this was a first for them. Next step: load up some Adox CMS 20 II into a film camera and shoot it. In theory, I should be able to create a resolution test strip for 35mm film scanners using this method 🤷🏽‍♂️ by @skar_image_lab

In between my trips across the Tasman, I continue to produce and work on unique artworks, exhibitions and projects in New Zealand, just like this one.

At 1100x1100mm, this was a very special and large commissioned edition of Untitled Abstraction No. 4, 2025. Such a beautiful hand-made darkroom print.

Recomposed to a square format while keeping the main subject matter off centre as per the original 8x10 inch print. Printed on Ilford Smooth Pearl 310gsm, for its impressive stipple and saturation. Framed in bright aluminium. It’s a serious in cool factor and size.

This work was printed at Skar Image Lab with the help of Sanji @skar_image_lab

A few months ago, I received news that the portrait I took of my father, Kanagalingam, made it through to the second round of judging for the @nationalportraitgallery’s Winston Taylor Photo Portrait Prize 2026. It didn’t progress to the final exhibition, but I was grateful to have sent my artwork to London, working closely with Sanji @skar_image_lab to get the portrait printed, packed up and shipped off.

Congratulations to all the photographers who made it to the final exhibition! taken in Auckland, New Zealand by @skar_image_lab

Recently had the pleasure of scanning Auckland photographer, @dustynegs 35mm film. He’ll be printing them at @skar_image_lab in the near future. Will post up the finished product when they’re done. Always amazed at how much detail you can capture on 35mm. Scroll through to see hairs getting split by @skar_image_lab
