📊 STEM meets figure skating! ⛸️ 💖

💎 Thanks @skate_wang2005 for sharing this gem with us!

➡️ From Kate: Torque is essentially the “force” needed to get an object to rotate. It’s given by an object’s moment of inertia multiplied by its angular acceleration. If an object’s moment of inertia (distribution of mass) changes, the rotational acceleration must change to compensate.

⚖️ This is why we rotate slower with our mass distributed far away from us (open air position) and rotate much faster when the mass is distributed close to the axis of rotation (pulled in).

Very cool!! 😊

I’ve now made 10 nerdy passion projects, so I thought I’d take a trip down parody lane. Many thanks to all who have been part of these productions over the years!
1. “Statistics”, AKA the one that started it all. #apstatistics
#parody #math #youtube

2. “Graph the Night”, AKA the one I sound the worst in but hey at least there’s a drone involved (thanks @jmo.joshing!!). MATH 11A #calculus #derivatives

3. “I Integrate”, AKA the one that was sent to the entire UCSC math department (thanks Pedro). MATH 11B #calculus #integration

4. “Gen Chem”, AKA the one where I really started going ham on visual effects. CHEM 3 series #chemistry

5. “u Belongs in V”, AKA a Japan travel vlog. MATH 21 #linearalgebra

6. “Using the Laws of Motion”, AKA the one whose filming process was the most fun. PHYS 6A #physics #kinematics

7. “Level Sets”, AKA the one with fire transitions but the most awkward lyrics. MATH 23 series #vectorcalculus

8. “Last Christmas (I Gave You My Cells)”, AKA @kyrazion11 ‘s extra credit final project for BIOE 20B #physiologyanddevelopment

9. “Dealing with Solar”, AKA the one I filmed while my glasses were broken. BIOE 20B #physiologyanddevelopment

10. “Epsilon and Delta”, AKA the one I filmed a year after taking the hardest class in my life. MATH 105A #realanalysis by @skate_wang2005

UC Santa Cruz undergrad Kate Wang (Crown ’27, marine biology) spent most of her life on ice. She started figure skating at 4 years old and eventually went to the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics where she placed 13th in the world.

Now a second-year marine biology student minoring in statistics, Kate spends much of her time by the water. She’s working towards an eventual Ph.D. to become a researcher or a teacher — because being able to teach is one of her superpowers.

In addition to being a full-time student, Kate is also a successful content creator on YouTube. She started making educational mathematics music videos based on complex equations in high school, making AP statistics more fun and understandable. She’s made videos based on Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga songs, reaching hundreds of thousands of views.

Oh, and she’s also made a video with NBA basketball player Steph Curry for Snapchat.

We can’t wait to see what’s next. Read more of Kate’s story at our link in bio.

👋 ✨ Meet Kate Wang, a third-year @ucsc marine biology major whose research journey started with a flyer that promised free pizza…

One afternoon, Kate opened an email from her department with news of a mixer event put on by CORE (a student organization for grad students in ocean sciences), where graduate student researchers would be looking to recruit undergraduate assistants. She decided to skip her tutoring session to get that free pizza—and a good decision it was!

There, she networked, met her mentor, and ultimately landed her role in the Lam Lab. Now, Kate contributes to important research tasks in the lab … instead of just reading about Antarctic phytoplankton, she’s the one growing the cultures and studying how they use iron to survive.

During her first year of research, Kate has experienced many highlights, including being awarded the Kathryn D. Sullivan Research Impact Award and receiving the 2026 Koret Scholarship. She also attended her first research conference and presented her work.

"Learning what it is like to embody a researcher as a woman in STEM has been eye-opening,” she says.

Kate’s ultimate goal? Becoming a professor so she can research and teach at the same time! But first– she will spend next summer doing research at the @ucsandiego @scripps_ocean institute and plans to attend grad school after she completes her B.S.

We’re stoked to continue following @skatewang2005 on her inspiring journey! 🌊🔬⛸️ 🥳
