Well, I think I can say I’ve had a great coaching career so far. In the 36 years I have coached most of the top Bay Area skaters. Kate Wang @skate_wang2005 who got many JGP assignments. Placing as high as 5th at an international that she was selected for one more in Russia. Junior Olympics bronze medalist.
Ava Stephens @ava.sk8 made it to the National championships in our hometown of San Jose. Ava got 7th in Intermediate Ladies with a huge standing ovation. Ava just graduated from Penn State and is a huge social media influencer. So proud of her.
Polina Edmunds @polinaedmunds won the Silver medal at the 2016 Nationals championships. Polina won the short with a beautiful skate to Moonlight Sonata. Polina made it to the World Championships in Boston. Unfortunately she had to withdraw due to injury.
Alysa Liu I coached in Intermediate and Novice ladies. Fun fact at Sectionals was the first time she broke 100 in the free program. Of course, everyone knows Alysa Liu. She became an Olympic Champion. Kinda cool to think I was a tiny part of that journey .
Excited to see what the future brings me in my coaching career.

👋 ✨ Meet Kate Wang, a third-year @ucsc marine biology major whose research journey started with a flyer that promised free pizza…

One afternoon, Kate opened an email from her department with news of a mixer event put on by CORE (a student organization for grad students in ocean sciences), where graduate student researchers would be looking to recruit undergraduate assistants. She decided to skip her tutoring session to get that free pizza—and a good decision it was!

There, she networked, met her mentor, and ultimately landed her role in the Lam Lab. Now, Kate contributes to important research tasks in the lab … instead of just reading about Antarctic phytoplankton, she’s the one growing the cultures and studying how they use iron to survive.

During her first year of research, Kate has experienced many highlights, including being awarded the Kathryn D. Sullivan Research Impact Award and receiving the 2026 Koret Scholarship. She also attended her first research conference and presented her work.

"Learning what it is like to embody a researcher as a woman in STEM has been eye-opening,” she says.

Kate’s ultimate goal? Becoming a professor so she can research and teach at the same time! But first– she will spend next summer doing research at the @ucsandiego @scripps_ocean institute and plans to attend grad school after she completes her B.S.

We’re stoked to continue following @skatewang2005 on her inspiring journey! 🌊🔬⛸️ 🥳
