“An exquisite eye.” —Patti Smith

“This book is not an introduction to Africa. It is an act of self-contemplation and a lingering farewell to a mist-filled fantasy that never was. It is an unleaving.” —David Pilling, from the foreword of “Burnt Eyes”

Selections from “Burnt Eyes” by Gilles Nicolet with poetry by Tanur Shah. Copies are available via the link in the bio. Learn more at skeletonkeypress.com

Also, see the current issue of Black+White Photography (UK) for their feature article and interview with Gilles Nicolet.

Selctions from “As We Speak” by Maura Sullivan, visit skeletonkeypress.com or use the link in the bio to read more or to purchase a copy

“As We Speak is a dark, grainy dreamscape driven by exquisite gestures with shadows lurking at every turn. . . . Long after this haunting journey, one is still possessed by its state of endless longing.” —Amy Arbus @amyarbus

“Maura Sullivan is a sorceress. She casts spells on her subjects (she loves them all), and each one is transformed into an image equally beautiful, melancholic, and utterly out of time. She is a very good (and very romantic) witch.” —Michael Ackerman @michaelackermanwork

“Maura Sullivan’s third monograph, As We Speak [. . .] lives between dream and reality, as if between wakefulness and sleepwalking, in constant dialogue with the invisible, bearing witness to a spiritual dimension that is not religiosity.” —Fabien Ribery, L’intervalle @lintervalle.blog

Selections from “Alone Forever Sometimes” by Russell Joslin. A limited number of copies are available at skeletonkeypress.com or through the link in the bio.

“We are our head, we are our mind, we are our imagination. Russell Joslin’s ‘Alone Forever Sometimes’ presents that philosophical premise stunningly [. . .] expanding once again the territory of our struggling souls wrestling down life’s tremors and wonders.” — Arno Rafael Minkkinen

“Filled with stunning tenderness and whimsy, in Russell Joslin’s first monograph of self-portraits, ‘Alone Forever Sometimes,’ [. . .] he throws himself in and out of wild landscapes that come from within our deep and very human feelings of longing and love. We are Alone, but not always.” —Nancy Rexroth

“Each image is like a poem, something to savor.” —Janieta Eyre

Find out more about Burnt Eyes by Gilles Nicolet, published by Skeleton Key Press, in our exclusive book review. @gillesnicolet @skeletonkeypress

Some photobooks reveal their ambition slowly. Burnt Eyes by Gilles Nicolet captures your attention from the very first image, but its true strength lies in how consistently that sense of wonder continues throughout the book. It asks for time, attention, and a slower way of looking. The photographs move like memory itself — soft at the edges, returning to certain moments while letting others fade.

For more than three decades, Nicolet has returned to Africa with his camera, and that long relationship gives the work its strength. He is not trying to define a continent or explain the places he visits. Instead, he photographs what lingers after the moment has passed: a face turned from the light, a road dissolving into dust, a lone tree beneath an immense sky. These are not pictures made for spectacle. They are shaped by familiarity, patience, and trust.(...)
