Find out more about Burnt Eyes by Gilles Nicolet, published by Skeleton Key Press, in our exclusive book review. @gillesnicolet @skeletonkeypress

Some photobooks reveal their ambition slowly. Burnt Eyes by Gilles Nicolet captures your attention from the very first image, but its true strength lies in how consistently that sense of wonder continues throughout the book. It asks for time, attention, and a slower way of looking. The photographs move like memory itself — soft at the edges, returning to certain moments while letting others fade.

For more than three decades, Nicolet has returned to Africa with his camera, and that long relationship gives the work its strength. He is not trying to define a continent or explain the places he visits. Instead, he photographs what lingers after the moment has passed: a face turned from the light, a road dissolving into dust, a lone tree beneath an immense sky. These are not pictures made for spectacle. They are shaped by familiarity, patience, and trust.(...)

The cheetah was less than 5 feet away from me. I was low on the ground and moving very very very slowly, with a 35mm lens mounted on my camera. All its attention was focused on some gazelles in the distance, and it allowed my presence. It never moved away, and when i finally left an hour later it was still sitting on the termite mount, scanning the horizon.

Inspite of having been in the Ngorongoro Crater countless times, this was the first time I came across a feeding frenzy of birds. These birds were fishing in a small pond, hunting frogs and other creatures. Their elegant forms, their tolerance of one another, the grace…. I immediately imagined a shot such as this. Letting the birds compose the frame and the light do its magic, I think this is an easy photo to read. Its appeal is universal perhaps because, as humans, it’s impossible to not be moved by a ballet of graceful white birds on a dark backdrop.

The second shot shows a dead African Genet lying on the tarmac, killed by a passing car the previous night. It made a very strange impression on me. The tarmac was only now starting to warm and ready to give away the dew from the night. Its fur was beautiful, in its design, the stroke of an artist. Stripes and spots, perfectly placed. This fragile, magnificent creature was now lying dead across the road. Perhaps it was blinded by the lights, perhaps it was hunting insects on the road, perhaps following a mate. For no fault of its own, its life was now over. I took a moment to pay homage to its beauty, saddened by where it died - on a road, at the hand of man. Reckless, unconceeding and perhaps without a trace of remorse.

Even though i absolutely love wildlife, i have never considered myself a wildlife photographer. I am convinced that wildlife photography is the most difficult form of photography. It demands tenacity, patience and genuine creativity, perhaps because it is also one of the most exploited forms. It is very easy to repeat one’s self and it takes true vision to form a “signature”. So, I have great respect for those who have what it takes, photographers like Michael “Nick” Nichols or Paul Nicklen, for example. They bend the norms only to show us something new, fascinating, outstanding.
