Body Paint - Acrylic on chipboard

•She’s finally done. After so much time and effort I think I’m finally ready to be done with this piece. The initial concept was based off of this old TV series I liked called Skin Wars where people competed to be the best at body painting. I used to love these episodes they had where they would bring the artists and a live canvas model to a random location and challenge the artist to completely camouflage their model into the scenery behind them. So, I thought it would be a funny idea if a normal person was walking around one day and encountered a camouflaged person in real life since it would prolly be really scary hehe. Anyways it was a fun challenge to render each and every vegetable and do my best to make the camouflaged person not immediately visible at first glance, but noticeable once you took a closer look. Might make this into a series we’ll see...
Anyways I can put this piece behind me now yippee!🥬🍅🥦🍆🥒🥕🫑🍠 by @sketchartess

Stay Alive or Die Trying - Mixed media sculpture

•My fav sculpture I’ve made!! This guy was soooo much trial and error but I’m so proud of how he turned out. Initially my idea started as the intention to make the image of a street performer (those guys that paint themselves silver and look like statues) who had somehow died, but since they hold their poses so long, no one noticed and in time he became a statue in his own way. Lots of other imagery here of course like of the nature of walking past homeless individuals and treating them as part of the cityscape similarly to a statue and lots of other stuff I can go into. I wanted to evoke the sentiment that the world is harsh and as hard as you may try, we all go the same way in the end. As pictured in the last slide, he is made from a cardboard structure (initially was gonna use foam but got too expensive) and then thrifted clothes was fitted on top of that frame to fill him out. He got spray painted silver but the clothes didn’t allow for the metallicness to come through so he ended up being more of a stone gray which I kinda like as it connects to my theming. Did a bunch of weathering with paint, actual dirt and plants, used gum, and cotton as moss as well as a bit of shading under his clothes’ folds to help him feel a bit less organic and slightly more carved out. Every one of his fingers broke off the plaster hand I casted by the time I got to photographing but I didn’t super mind as they kinda just seem a bit more beat up (the missing bloody finger is a hint towards his real flesh body underneath the paint). And lastly, a plaster bandage cast of my own face to serve as his own. Left him in the courtyard of my school and hung around to see how people reacted to him in passing, lots of nervous glances, avoidant walking paths, and in one guys case, complete unawareness to the art piece sitting next to him lol. Anyways yeah he’s awesome I loved making him. by @sketchartess

Spicy - Plaster casted wax tongue candle

•Another silly one. Second assignment for casting and moldmaking in which we had to choose a property of wax (fire, melting, scent, heat, etc.) and convert it into an object or idea we could make a candle out of. For mine I wanted to play with the idea of a food being so spicy that your tongue feels on fire (also like the flavors are melting on my tongue😻). Made a two part plaster mold and casted a bunch of different colored tongues but had to pierce through the tip of the tongues in order to add the wick as it could be done another way since my shape was a bit abnormal. Anyways yeah I rly like these guys, I tried adding texture by brushing on melted wax to get that bumpy taste bud look as well as adding a glossy varnish so they seemed constantly slimed hehe. 😛 by @sketchartess

Nessus Abducting Deianira replica- Plaster casted bas-relief, painted with acrylic

•My first piece made in my casting and moldmaking class! This piece was such a struggle tho. The prompt was to sculpt a replica of a bas-relief found in the Met using clay, make a mold from that using plaster, remove the clay and then cast plaster into that mold, remove it (break it a ton in the process) and then paint it to look old. I understand why we needed to learn the hard way of making molds first in order to appreciate the easier rubber based methods but it was actually pretty fun kind of having to make mistakes and solve them along the way. The original piece is based on a Greek mythological story so I really wanted to keep it white to retain that marble look but we had to color the plaster for the assignment so I figured I would just make it look like it had been sitting around a while (though looking back I could have done a better job, too shiny/more texture) anyways yes tada there will be more casting and moldmaking stuff to come but this was the beginning😻 by @sketchartess

Time Heals All Wounds? - Multimedia sculpture, turmeric+baking soda chemical reaction

• This was a very quick project I made in one night for an assignment where our sculptures had to “expire” in some fashion. For my piece I wanted to emulate the experience of having old scars or pain that eventually fades away physically, but lingers in our minds and memories regardless. To translate that sentiment I decided to use this cool technique I found where you can make “invisible ink” from household items. You do this by mixing baking soda and water, painting it on to a surface, and then painting on a turmeric and isopropyl alcohol mixture on top of that once it’s dry. The two mixtures combined create this stunning fiery red and the places left untouched are stained bright yellow from the turmeric. I applied the first mixture by knocking or smacking my hands onto the piece then with the second turmeric mixture wanted to have a much more gentle application to reveal the handmade “scars”. Since I was on a time crunch I didn’t really have time to make a more thought out form but deffffinitely want to continue exploring the chemical reaction part on future works!👩‍🔬 by @sketchartess

The Plight of Man - Woodcut

•Ayyy biggest print yet this guy is like 24x24 not including the paper. I really like this print I think I got my vision across and made it as nasty looking as possible which is perfect. Made it hard for myself to carve cuz I used plywood instead of literally any other type of wood ever like an idiot but it’s fine I figured it out. Supa fun! by @sketchartess

Poor Girl - Sequins, ballpoint pins, recycled foam, spray foam

•This was definitely a labor of love. I wanted to make a figure that was beautiful but uncomfortable to look at. Her pose suggests she doesn’t want the viewer to see her in this state though she has still done her best to create a cover for herself using both her hands and her glittery shell of skin. This piece was a meticulous process of subtractive and additive sculpting, layering sequins upon sequins, and poking and re-poking different colored pins into the exact right color layouts I envisioned. This piece was made in a very short timespan of two weeks with most of the sequining happening in the last few days due to how painstaking the carving and shaping processes were. I never got to complete the back of the piece but I have some fun plans for it once I have the time (think blood and guts and vulnerability meets cutesy sparkly and appealing). Excited to see how this piece will strengthen once it is fully completed! by @sketchartess

Spell Castisg - Linocut

•Yes the title is correct, but only because I accidentally carved the wrong letter onto the book the wizard is using, oops. Silly little wizard for my relief class and that’s about it. A lot went wrong in the carving process so a few details are hard to make out but oh well I still think he’s cool by @sketchartess

Breakfast, Sandwich - Monoprinted paper wrapped on airdry sculpture

• I will most likely be re-posting this again later as I want to photograph these pieces in a cuter and better lit setting but thought I’d at least post them for now so people can actually see them finally. These were made for my printmaking final last semester. I was fascinated by the idea of breaking the generally 2D mold that printmaking falls into and decided I would try to make a print piece into a 3D object. I love the idea of how food looks in art (if you couldn’t already tell by all my previous work) and decided to create some slightly gross looking picnic food. I was originally going to also make a cake to go along with this ensemble but didn’t end up having time, so maybe when I repost I’ll have been able to add that to the table too. All the food I chose was random just based on what I thought the coolest textures would be to replicate but funnily enough they all ended up being foods that I don’t like such as breakfast food, sandwiches, and overly sweet pastries which I decided to play into by making some of the food moldy and unappealing to look at/eat. This was a pretty fun process of trying to replicate all the food textures with ink, printing them in various layers onto flexible rice paper, and then wrapping and sealing the paper onto sculpted objects with mod podge. Loved this process and will definitely continue to use this technique in future sculpture projects for sure. Anyways yes I will take some nice pictures soon yay! by @sketchartess

My Good Friend David • Acrylic on canvas

•The last piece I made as a painting major before switching to sculpture! What a silly piece like it was supposed to be a still life of one small object but I got a bit carried away as always and this is what resulted in that, oops🥰. This is my second piece about sunflower seeds so it’s safe to say I am nothing less than obsessed with my favorite snack so maybe this will be reoccurring subject matter forever on. I had such a good time really getting into the little details of the sunflower seed bag and trying to get all the little reflections right. Not rly a meaning behind this piece besides just that I rly like David sunflower seeds and I’m lazy so my arm is stretching to reach them, idk. Anyways yay super fun piece I like her. by @sketchartess
