“The Columbian white-tailed deer is a unique subspecies all its own and hangs its horns in Oregon and southwest Washington along the lower Columbia River, and in Oregon’s Umpqua Basin near the town of Roseburg–which also happens to be the lone place on the planet where they can be legally hunted.

As its legal name would suggest, the Columbian white-tailed deer has always been a part of the local ecosystem, coexisting alongside the far more well-known Columbian black-tailed deer. Columbian whitetails prefer a riparian habitat, as many of their whitetail brethren will. In Oregon, they’re often found along riverbanks and in wet lowlands and regularly make use of whatever thickets they can find for concealment, up to and including the dense pockets of Pacific poison oak that litter the Umpqua Basin. Though they tend to stay out of the coniferous coastal forest that the region’s blacktail deer will roam, it’s not uncommon to see the two species simultaneously moving through the region’s oak savanna. On a hunt in 2024, I killed a blacktail not a hundred yards away from where a buddy had killed his first-ever Columbian whitetail just a day earlier. Both deer had, at different times, been bedding down in the same thick brush…”

Was privileged to spend a week last month hunting Saskatchewan with @live2hunt_with_cody_and_kelsy and @l2h_outfitting_co! @cameramanrichy and I had a fun close encounter with this beautiful boar, and caught the whole thing on camera, too - more on that, later. It’s been almost two months since @feralfork, @seth.swerczek, @christian_hoffman, and I rolled the dice on a wild one: Hunting arctic wolves along the famous ice roads of the Northwest Territories. Temperatures hit as low as -60 and days were long…but well worth the physical toll. Amazing trip, amazing people, and my first wolf down.
