Below-average guy with above-average dreams. Making PR magic happen for @leupoldoptics.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It was a homecoming of sorts, stalking red stag in the Scottish homelands 360 years after my particular clan departed. Or maybe it was the warm and generous people who made it so familiar. Either way, an epic week with the keepers and ghillies of #kildermorieestate in Scotland’s high north. #leupoldoptics #browningfirearms #winchesterammunition

Three days and 1,000+ miles to watch this buck crest a little hill at sunrise.

A bit of Google sleuthing turned up the number for the local Hutterite colony secretary, who granted me passage with the magic words: “I supposed dat would be alright.”

I waited for the herd to wander over the hill a little more than 1,000 yards out, then crept in on hands and knees inching my way to the top of the hill. Poked my head up and discovered I’d crashed the party. Thirty-plus lopers, under 75 yards, all of us equally surprised. One quick offhand shot at the hay hook buck from about 70 yards and that was that.

Ten years of waiting for a Montana antelope tag, and now it’s my second notched tag of the season. Consider the western antelope derby completed.

Delightful critters. The drive time, however, is strictly for the birds

“The Columbian white-tailed deer is a unique subspecies all its own and hangs its horns in Oregon and southwest Washington along the lower Columbia River, and in Oregon’s Umpqua Basin near the town of Roseburg–which also happens to be the lone place on the planet where they can be legally hunted.

As its legal name would suggest, the Columbian white-tailed deer has always been a part of the local ecosystem, coexisting alongside the far more well-known Columbian black-tailed deer. Columbian whitetails prefer a riparian habitat, as many of their whitetail brethren will. In Oregon, they’re often found along riverbanks and in wet lowlands and regularly make use of whatever thickets they can find for concealment, up to and including the dense pockets of Pacific poison oak that litter the Umpqua Basin. Though they tend to stay out of the coniferous coastal forest that the region’s blacktail deer will roam, it’s not uncommon to see the two species simultaneously moving through the region’s oak savanna. On a hunt in 2024, I killed a blacktail not a hundred yards away from where a buddy had killed his first-ever Columbian whitetail just a day earlier. Both deer had, at different times, been bedding down in the same thick brush…”

Got an awesome opportunity to go hang out with some good dudes. @heartspearoutfitters found this antelope with a tongue injury presumably from fighting. Turned out…he was a good one.

New Episode of NAW TV airing tonight with the @weatherbyinc muzzleloader in Virgina! We put these new smoke poles to work on several hunts last fall with Leupold Optics and Hornady Bore Driver ELDX bullets! Needless to say the meat is in the freezer and the bucks are at the taxidermists!

A sincere thank you as well to David Draper for capturing the experience so beautifully in Peterson’s Hunting magazine, and to everyone from Peterson’s Hunting, Leupold Optics, and Hornady Manufacturing for showcasing our Arctic wolf hunt and the extraordinary wilderness of Canada’s Northwest Territories. It was an honour to share this unforgettable adventure with all of you, and we’re grateful for helping tell the story of this remarkable place.

OUR PAL “SKIPPER”… When your optics sponsor comes to camp, and you can’t find him a bear, so your cook just builds him one! 🥴… 🤣

This guy is a beauty!!! A year ago the good people at @leupoldoptics flew us out to their headquarters in Oregon, for a long range shooting experience, which was AWESOME!

This was the first time I met Shawn Skipper in person. This gentleman swings a pretty big loop, on Leupold team… He was so much fun to be around, and you could tell he was just a good guy! Before the trip was over, I told Skipper about our bear camp, and I threw out the invite for him to come hunt bears with me.

As it turned out, Skipper booked a full week and brought his great friend Rafe Nielsen of @browningfirearms and two outdoor writers, @willbrantleyky and @muleycrazy89.

Leading up to this week, I was pressured up! I just wanted this adventure to go the very best it could. Leupold and Browning are two of the most prestigious, well respected brands in the hunting world, and somehow some way, we’re now with both teams/brands, which means the world to me.

Who knows how it went! Ha ha… I know we had a boat load of fun! We caught fish(Skipper broke the camp record for smallest catch EVERRR), we killed the buckle bear, and we made great new friendships and memories.

Grateful for this fine crew of gentlemen! 🙏
