NOTICE WHAT’S AROUND YOU. 🌿🎨🎶🌻🐝🐦‍⬛ For JCAST 2026, Jersey City Recreation & Youth Development brought student art, nature and music together at Historic Reservoir 3 Preserve in the Heights. Led by interdisciplinary artist and Jersey City Poet Laureate Melida Rodas, in collaboration with Dawn Giambalvo, Green Infrastructure Specialist and Site Manager of Historic Reservoir 3, Jersey City public school fourth graders took part in a nature-based learning experience combining STEAM education, eco-literacy, climate justice, creative expression and park stewardship. Students returned with families to see their artwork installed throughout the Preserve, interact with visitors about their messages and invite the community to add to an evolving community art installation at the Pin Oak Corner. Xylophone artist Eldad Tarmu completed the experience with original, site-specific music and invited students to play along. 📸 @jbrophoto by @skootymiss

Jersey City’s Department of Recreation & Youth Development’s Nature-Based Storytime is bringing books, movement, music and hands on nature exploration together under the trees at the Historic Reservoir #3 Preserve. 🌿📚🦋 Gathered in our Pin Oak Corner, young nature explorers have been reading about butterflies, seeds and insects, then taking a closer look at the native plants growing around us and learning how they provide food and habitat for local wildlife. We pretended, moved, clapped, sang, explored and learned together with friends old and new. Because sometimes the best way to connect children with nature is to let them experience it with their whole bodies.  This outdoor storytime series is a collaboration between the Jersey City Public Library and the Jersey City Department of Recreation & Youth Development. Two sessions remain! Our next Nature-Based Storytime is Wednesday, September 16 at Historic Reservoir #3 Preserve. JCAST 2026 at Historic Reservoir 3 Preserve 🌿🎨📚🎶 This Saturday 10/3 and Sunday 10/4, the Jersey City Department of Recreation & Youth Development is proud to participate in the Jersey City Art & Studio Tour with an outdoor installation featuring poetry and artwork created by Jersey City public school 4th-grade students. The work grew out of the Department’s nature-based field trip program at Historic Reservoir # 3, where students combined reading, creative writing, art and environmental education while exploring the Preserve as an outdoor classroom. Through classroom preparation and hands-on field experiences, students learned about local habitats, wildlife, birds, pollinators, native plants and the Reservoir landscape, then used their observations as inspiration for their own writing and artwork. Their work will now become part of the landscape that inspired it, with student poetry and art displayed throughout the Preserve for JCAST weekend. The program builds on our collaboration with Jersey City Poet Laureate Melida Rodas @melidarodaspoet , bringing together environmental education, research, poetry, visual art and direct observation while giving young people a public audience for their creative voices. 🎶 SPECIAL LIVE MUSIC BOTH DAYS Xylophone artist Eldad Tarmu will perform Saturday and Sunday from 4:00–5:00 PM, creating an immersive experience of nature + poetry + art + music throughout the site. 📍 Historic Reservoir 3 Preserve Howie Fink Way at Pershing Field Jersey City Heights 📅 Saturday, October 3 & Sunday, October 4 🕗 8:00 AM–6:00 PM 🎶 Live music: 4:00–5:00 PM both days 🌿 Free & open to the public Come walk the Reservoir, read the students’ words, experience their artwork, listen to live music and see this historic natural space through the eyes of Jersey City’s young people. We had such a blast at Friday's paste paper workshop! Participants got their hands dirty (in the best way), using ordinary objects and colored paste to create surprising patterns on paper.
