On September 30th, Sq’ewqéyl First Nation will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

For our community, this history is personal. Our families have been directly impacted by the Residential School system, including connections to Coqualeetza Residential School and Coqualeetza Hospital, St. Mary’s Institution, other Residential Schools, and Indian Day Schools. We also recognize the lasting impact of the Sixties Scoop on our community and families. Today, we honour Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the families and generations who continue to carry these experiences and their impacts.

Orange Shirt Day grew from the story of Phyllis Webstad and her experience attending St. Joseph Mission Residential School. Her story helped grow a grassroots movement centered around the message that Every Child Matters.

As we mark this day, we encourage everyone to take care of themselves and one another. Please check in with your family, friends, Elders and community members, and make space for whatever people may be feeling or carrying.

Support Services:

We would also like to share support services available for former Residential School students and those affected.

Turtle Training Day! 🐢

Our Land Stewardship team recently visited Wildlife Preservation Canada’s Western Painted Turtle and Oregon Spotted Frog head start and rehabilitation program at the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

As both species are listed as Species at Risk, conservation efforts like these are critical to helping protect and restore their populations.

The team had the opportunity to learn about the species' lifecycles, explore the facility and its equipment, and see firsthand how the head start program helps reduce early predation from herons, ravens, and other wildlife.

We're excited that the Skowkale Hatchery will be developing a new Western Painted Turtle rehabilitation program in partnership with WPC and Andrea.

A big thank you to Andrea for sharing her knowledge and helping make this a valuable learning experience for our team! 💚 by @skowkale
