🦌 RUT REPORT | 📍 Northern Alberta

@she_alpha_wolf checking in from the Timbers in northern Alberta, and things are changing fast. 🍂

Temperatures have been all over the place and Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. Deer numbers are down in her area this year, but there’s plenty of sign in the timber. Now it’s about putting in the hours and waiting for the cold to get them moving.

With temps dropping significantly in the evenings, layering decides how long you can stay out. Cathy is running a layered SKRE system (the Blacktail Sweater and Sawtooth Jacket) so she can stay warm on the sit.

4 point layering system:

1) Base layers: Kaibab 300 merino wool hoodie and full length zipper pants (+/- Kaibab 150 merino short sleeve)

2) Insulating layers/active wear: Harscrabble jacket, hardscrabble pants, Sawtooth jacket

3) Emergency layer: Ptarmigan down jacket and Ptarmigan down pants

4) Rain layers: Nebo rain jacket and Nebo rain pants

Waterfowl hunters don’t get nearly enough credit. 🦆

There’s no trail cam doing the work for you. No sitting back waiting to see what shows up on your phone. It’s boots on the ground, evenings ontop of evenings of scouting, glassing fields at first light, and knocking on doors for permission.

It’s setting decoys in the dark with frozen fingers. Wind, rain, sleet, mud, ice - you take whatever the day throws at you. And just when you think you’ve got them figured out, the birds switch it up and you start all over again.

It’s a grind. It’s an art. And most people never see the work behind the limit.

So here’s to the ones who earn every bird. 🦆👊🏼
