#Hurricane season. With Isaias in the news and eyes on Hurricane Simon, I was reminded of Hurricane Andrew in 1992, one of the strongest and costliest in history. Back then, a more traditional painter, I made “Homestead,” referencing one place in Miami-Dade FL devastated by the storm (oil on canvas, 40”h x 34”w, private collection). Looking back, I see it’s an early example of the interplay of patterns, historical events, and nature in my work. #oilpainting

With efforts to dismantle #NOAA and #FEMA, it’s terrifying to think of how we will cope with worsening storms. [Image of Andrew making landfall in 1992, from NOAA. Public domain] #vote by @sky.pape

This is a detail of a large work on paper. You’d gasp at how long it took to make it. Many iterations over time. I’d start and stop but my guts insisted something was there...

But my route is a spiral, not a direct line, so I kept coming back. Ten years is nothing, right? I decided I’d resolve this piece or ruin it trying and come out with a lesson learned. (This is another detail)

Layers of ink, graphite, paint and more. And text. What’s with the text?

Over 25 years ago, when I moved to northernmost Manhattan, I became captivated by a site where the notorious deal went down for the “purchase” of Manhattan. I learned that putting a plaque on a rock is also a kind of insult, but that’s another story…

This bit of history had a giant impact on me. Buy me a coffee sometime and I’ll tell you how. Or come uptown and I’ll show you. I'll still want that coffee though.

After this, I began making more rubbings from public monuments and historical plaques, selecting words and phrases that reflect how those histories have shaped my life and the country. This one was the "aha" for me.

Finally finished, this piece became the start of my current “Impressions” series. In full view, here’s “On This Site,” 26”h x 73” w, Flashe, ink, graphite, crayon, acrylic, and birch bark on handmade paper, 2023 (photo: @jeanmarievong ) #artonpaper #artcollector #curator taken in Inwood, Manhattan by @sky.pape

It was quite a milestone for me to be formally inducted into the National Academy of Design on Nov 8th, alongside the accomplished artists and architects in the Class of 2025 - and on such an auspicious day - the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Academy! I am grateful to my peers for this honor and opportunity to be involved, and I recognize all who have helped me through your encouragement, examples, care, interest, and love of art! And where better to celebrate than at one of my favorite places, The Morgan?! Thank you to the Academy's staff, Director, President, Board, and the sponsors involved in making the celebration so special.

Sharing these amateur phone pix - details of a large work on paper, 31"h x 58"w, taken a few days before I completed it. Text fragments are rubbings I made at Castle Clinton, in NYC, the nation's first official immigrant processing center, where over 8 million people entered the US. #workinprogress #artstudio #artonpaper #ink #contemporaryabstract by @sky.pape

Something new underway on the studio floor. Far from done, a million things could go wrong - or right! Never gets easier and never gets boring.

Work in progress - a nod to the USPS and its importance to me. My 💖💖💖 & respect for USPS employees!
Unlike other valuable institutions I hold dear (public library is another), the post office is included in the Constitution. Unfortunately, that doesn't make it invulnerable against destructive powers.
