💖 Deep Gratitude 💖

People often ask how we find our artists. Here is one answer. ✨

When we opened our doors in 2020,
in the middle of the pandemic,
our neighbor and advisory member
Frances Hynes stood by us.

Frances introduced us to
So many wonderful artists:
John Fekner, Margie Neuhaus,
Sky Pape,Richard Keen,
Peter Gerakaris,
and Paul Fabozzi.

She also connected us to another
great Bayside artist, Freddy Rodriguez
(now sadly passed), who was able
to visit and see Frances’ exhibition.

Since then, our art community
continued to grow & blossomed —
artists recommending each other,
press covering our shows,
donors big and small,
and grants and venue support
from institutions.

From the bottom of our hearts,
thank you,
each and every one of you
who support us and love art.

For the artist, by the artist, of the artist.
Together, we continue the journey. ♥️

Sky Pape @sky.pape (member since 2024) is known for abstract hybrids of drawing and painting, and a deep engagement with materials and mark-making. Pape’s interest in mathematics and her past work in research science inform her inquiries into the perception and interpretation of visual information. Her compositions play with shifting forms and optical effects that encourage the viewer to linger in ambiguity, open to layered interpretations.
.
Pape has exhibited widely in galleries and museums and is represented in museum, corporate, and private collections internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Pape’s honors and awards include two fellowships from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the E.D. Foundation, the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation, Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and a City Artist Corps grant from New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA)/NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. In 2024, the Art Dealers Association of America’s Art Show Committee honored work from Pape’s solo presentation in The Art Show as “Best in Show Object” at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC.
.
If you are in downtown NYC this week, her work is currently in the show “Curvilinear Abstraction” at McKenzie Fine Art @mckenzie_fine_art through August 15.

Back from New York City after two days of looking at art and attending the inspiring Anonymous Was a Woman (AWAW) Symposium yesterday morning, thanks to its visionary founder Susan Unterberg (@susanunterberg1). The results of their groundbreaking survey of over 1,200 women artists of all ages was released to the public thanks to Julia Halperin (@juliahalperin) and Charlotte Burns (@charlieburnsnyc), co-founders of the Burns-Halperin Report and SMU. You can check out its revealing findings in my LinkTree.

It was so inspiring to be in a packed room of over 350 artists, curators, organization leaders, philanthropists, writers, and other movers-and-shakers, all dedicated to improving the lives of artists and the arts.

The outstanding intergenerational panelists all contributed to the palpable energy and excitement. The first panel "Artists Speak," included Coco Fusco (@cocof_usco), Judith Bernstein (@judith_bernstein) and Steffani Jemison (@steffanijemison). Jessica Morgan, the Dia Foundation Director presented a wonderful report on their recent progress made towards equity.

The second panel, “Breaking the Mold” included curator and artist Rashida Bumbray (@sunrara), Karen Patterson (@pattkaren), Executive Director of the Ruth Foundation for the Arts, Nicola Vassell (@nicolavassellgallery), gallerist and Connie Butler (@cornelia.butler), Director of MoMA PS1.

Afterwards, I joined with some wonderful artist friends, Heide Fasnacht, Fredricka Foster, Nancy Davidson, Sky Pape, Jude Tallichet, and Deborah Wasserman--for lunch, then headed over to the Grey Art Museum to enjoy the 25th Anniversary AWAW show where many of my friends like Janet Biggs (@janetbiggs1), Judy Pfaff (@judy.pfaff), and Mary Lucier (@marylucierart) were included.
