Finding myself solo on this Mother’s Day with kids spread around everywhere living their lives, exactly what we spend those years raising them hoping they go on to do. Well they did, they are and I’m proud of them … so for the first time in a long time, I’m having a moment to reflect about my own mama.
I’ve found myself living down in Mississippi very unexpectedly and very much walking in her shoes, also unexpected. I’m the one that ran off to NYC from Ole Miss as soon as possible, and after her waiting years for me to come back down south, hoping after 1 kid, then 2, then 3 then 4, she finally quit asking. I like to think that she understood. Chapter two Mississippi started with a covid flee from Bali (IYKTK), a friend insisting we come on down, we landed so deep in the back Mississippi woods that my 40 years living away seemed like the blink of an eye. I was right back where I started, oddly enough this time there was a fishing pond right outside the back door not a drive away like growing up. That friend and I spent a lot of time on that pond those first covid months. One evening he caught 8 bass in about 45 minutes, I sat and sipped in awe watching him pull one after another out. He made me learn how to clean them that night as so far in my whole fishing life all I would do was put the worm on the hook and then pull in the tight line to then dangle writhing fish near my father’s head. But the Yeti cups were overflowing with Tito’s those early covid months and what we realized when we talked to our doctors that one drink was really three🤣 so skinning them wasn’t a problem that night and my friends hospitality in getting me back to my roots will never be forgotten. Thank you TT 🙏🏻That was 5 years ago and 4 years before that my mama passed away so very sadly we didn’t overlap back in Mississippi but I have signs and can feel everyday how happy she is to know I’m here.
