🧑🏻‍🎤⚡️🏄🏻‍♂️ CROWDSURFING WITH BOWIE! LIVE ON MTV! All The Young Dudes! 10/14/97 On the occasion of David Bowie’s 78th Birthday, dearly departed, please allow me 2 share my story. 13 Oct 1997: I attended a David Bowie concert at The Supper Club with my best friend Brian Cancellieri, 4 whom I’m eternally grateful 4 many things, especially 4 turning me on 2 Bowie. (Brian passed away FIVE YEARS b4 Bowie...both of them far 2 young...) On our way out, Brian & I were gifted tickets/recruited 4 a free Bowie show the next night @capitoltheatre in Port Chester, NY. It was the series premiere of a new MTV program, Live From The 10 Spot. (Apparently, The Rolling Stones were supposed 2 perform, but canceled days earlier, and Bowie stepped in...)
14 Oct 1997: I was happy 2 ditch my night class, but Brian couldn’t make it. So I wrangled @joeletz, my concert mischief buddy & future drumming legend 2 tag along. Matt Pinfield, notorious bald-headed VJ, broadcast live from the queue outside before doors opened. He asked Joe if he liked Bowie. Joe told him “No, but I love Nine Inch Nails.” (not entirely non-sequitur, as Bowie & NIN toured together in ‘95.) Then Joe asked Matt if he liked chillin’ in the massive Times Square Cup-O-Noodles billboard. I can’t remember Matt’s answer.
We were towards the front of the queue, & ended up quite close to the stage. Throughout the show, Joe, tall AF and determined, tried 2 hoist me above the crowd 4 a little crowdsurfing. The overwhelmingly older crowd weren’t so into it. We failed until the very last song, Mott the Hopple’s All the Young Dudes. I was airborne.
Bowie reached out, clasped MY hand & flashed one of his huge trademark grins! The contact only lasted a second, but it felt much longer, quite magical, as if I was @ the center of it all.
For the rest of my surf, I kept reaching 4 The Thin White Duke, until my tiger-print shirt, skinny black pants, green socks, & I fell to Earth, head first!
(You can relive it in this video clip, broadcast live on MTV.)
P.S. I met Marla Kanevsky @sigma_kid that night! @thesigmakids #davidbowie #mtv #alltheyoungdudes #thecap #capitoltheatre #bowie #crowdsurfing #gailanndorsey #briancancellieri taken in The Capitol Theatre by @sleeping_llama

💖11/18/25 Des Moines, Iowa, Val Air Ballroom, Trey’s mom’s hometown, which he riffed on throughout the night….first-ever full TAB Waste performed for, and sung along with a live audience. (See also 10/16/20 Beacon Jams) After the song finished, I noticed a young woman on the rail wiping away a thick coat of tears. I asked if she was ok. She said yes, and told me they read the lyrics to Waste at her mother’s funeral. She said she just never expected to see the song played live. #treyanastasio #treyanastasioband #comewasteyourtimewithme taken in Val Air Ballroom by @sleeping_llama

🧠⚾️💖 Shem Beck's Dream ("The Green Fields of the Mind")
"Active Hope is waking up to the beauty of life on whose behalf we can act." - Joanna Macy (May 2, 1929 – July 19, 2025) #baseball #bluejays #activehope
"...It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops..."
- The Green Fields of the Mind by A. Bartlett Giamatti (April 4, 1938 - September 1, 1989)
This classic baseball essay first appeared in the November 1977 issue of the Yale Alumni Magazine and Journal. It was later included in a 1998 book, A Great and Glorious Game: Baseball Writings of A. Bartlett Giamatti.
