Join SLOMA on December 12 from 3–5 PM for the public premiere of "Celebrating Our LGBTQI+ Elders: Stories from the Central Coast" presented by the Central Coast Queer Archive Project.

For nearly two years, this collaborative and community-based oral history project has been pairing student and youth interviewers with senior members of the queer community, and has yielded an inspiring intergenerational portrait of the LGBTQI+ experience on the Central Coast. The event will begin with a panel discussion from the project participants paired with selected video clips from the archive followed by a Q+A with the audience. Admission is free and wine and light refreshments will be provided.

Following the presentation, an informal dinner gathering will be held from 6–8 PM at Taco Temple, 1575 Calle Joaquin, San Luis Obispo. Seating is limited to COVID restrictions, so please RSVP to sloqueerarchive@gmail.com by December 5.

Today we celebrate Trans Day of Visibility. When we talk about visibility, we are not talking about trans folks being more recognizable. In many cases, this type of exposure only makes them a target for further harassment and discrimination. When we talk about visibility, we are talking about freedom - trans folks' right to be seen and accepted as they are. Prior to 2009, the only day celebrating the trans community had been Trans Day of Remembrance, a day that commemorated loss and grief. But trans lives are lives, not statistics about violence or death waiting to happen. It is important to celebrate the full and vibrant lives of trans-folks as they live, to give them the praise and respect and recognition they deserve. To all of our trans community members on this day, we see you, we love you, and we celebrate you today. by @sloqueerarchive

Good news, everyone! We know we’ve been quiet lately but that’s because we’ve been hard at work planning for our next project. We’re now excited to announce that we've been awarded a $5K “Quick Grant” from California Humanities for our efforts to document the lives of LGBTQ+ elders on the California Central Coast. This project entails ten original video interviews that we will make publicly available on our website: SLOqueerarchive.org, and feature at future public events dedicated to sharing the stories we collect with the community. More information about those events is forthcoming, but expect the first event sometime this summer in conjunction with 2021 Central Coast Pride celebrations.

Due to the pandemic, we remain in the planning stages, but we hope to begin interviewing as soon as we can do so with minimal risk. In the meantime, we are now building a list of interview candidates, so please spread the word to individuals who may be interested in teaming with us. Potential narrators can contact us via this IG account or via the contact form on our website. People interested in volunteering with the project can also reach out to us via those same means.

Finally, we’ll be highlighting the efforts of our current recovery projects, so look for more of those updates in the near future. We’ve learned a lot about SLO’s queer past, and we’re excited to begin sharing that history with you! California Humanities logo taken in San Luis Obispo, California by @sloqueerarchive

Sign the petition: No Prosecution for SLO County and northern Santa Barbara County Protesters Showing up for Racial Justice! (more info on our website, link in bio)

On Thursday October 15, 2020 charges were brought against additional protesters, 84 days after the July 21 protest and based on an independent investigation stemming from the District Attorney’s office.  The recent charges against Amman Asfaw, Marcus Montgomery, and Joshua Powell represent targeted harassment against young Black men that is inconsistent with the values of San Luis Obispo.

Since June 1st, the San Luis Obispo police department and District Attorney’s office has attempted to intimidate and violently suppress public organizing that draws attention to and challenges racial injustices. The arrests and charges against Tianna Aratta and Elias Bautista, along with other protesters, show a clear targeting of Black and brown youth activists in our community. The new charges are an explicit political statement meant to silence anti-racist activism in the county.

As residents of San Luis Obispo County, we have a social responsibility to hold local law enforcement and the District Attorney’s office accountable for their continued violence and judicial overreach against Black and brown lives.

We must insist that all charges be dropped and no new charges are filed, and we must demand that our elected officials invest in communities of color and divest from the use-of-force (weaponized and judicialized) against protesters showing up for racial justice.

We stand with all activists and organizers fighting for Black lives.
