Night Rider, out now via Bandcamp & Boomkat 🦄

Under heavy swarms of cicada drone and spectral hum, the story of Night Rider opens onto a motorcycle merging with a dream-smudged desert landscape. It’s a scene that reads part sci-fi pulp, part Wild West fantasy, and one that’s both an imaginary fact and a real fiction for Slowfoam, who spent their teens in the Sonoran Desert—itself a haze of natural marvels and spiritual malaise, deep-seeded mysticism and cookie-cutter mania.

Alongside the woozy drama of Patrick Shiroishi’s accompanying saxophone, Slowfoam glides through an ecosystem of sonic forces that swoon and slither and sway into and out of the body. At once composer, narrator, and alchemised echo of their own self-worlding, Slowfoam playfully entangles a quantum dialogue for eternity, overlaying palimpsests of “what was…” with poetic reconstructions engraved into the red rock of “...what if?”

Vinyl available exclusively at Boomkat until 17/09 - copies coming to Bandcamp and other stores soon after. Digital release available now via Bandcamp, streaming from tomorrow.

After months of planning, we are excited to invite you to dive into our aqueous, hydrofeminist festival, Liquiforms ~ tomorrow at @90mil___ . The program is filled to the brim with watery propositions for recalibrating our water bodies and moving more fluidly through the world. There will be a cinema, pop-up shop, installations, live performances, DJ sets, a workshop, a panel, and food. We hope to see you there 💧

@pablodiserens and I will present our performance “the pond” ~ an extension of a track by the same name on @___mappa ‘s Synthetic Water Music. Layering aqueous, icy, and amphibian field recordings with blown glass bottles, and spoken word, we will conjure a dreamy, bizarre, biomimetic exploration of a speculative pond moving within and beyond time.

Night Rider is out for download and streaming today, in time for Bandcamp Friday 🤍

The story Slowfoam tells is close to their heart; they spent their teenage years in the Sonoran Desert, the subtropical expanse across Arizona, California and Mexico best known as the setting for Spielberg’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’ Its alien landscape - towering cacti, looming rock formations - is lodged in the cultural imagination, something Byrd plays on as they slowly unfurl their poetic narrative.

‘Night Rider’ opens in this landscape, a widescreen chirp of cicadas cut through by Patrick Shiroishi’s sax like neon in the dark. From there the album moves like a road movie, creating motion from the atmosphere itself, recreating the thick desert air with shimmering electrical currents and psychedelic processes.

I spent 3 weeks in Iceland with @pablodiserens listening to the sounds of glaciers, ice growlers, puffins, arctic terns, geothermal activity, and the electromagnetic frequencies of power lines that traversed moss-covered lava fields, highlands, and fjords ~ a very human mark on an otherwise wild land. We melted, touched, meandered, sensed, soaked, napped, and dissolved into these landscapes.

Thank you to @clement.coudeyre for assisting us with our travels and guiding us on Sólheimajökull, @lirr_amoee for hosting us in the west fjords ~ a very cozy and memorable stop along the way, and Pablo for the adventure, support, and love <33
