‘The Taste of Life’ is OUT TODAY!

Listening to these songs now, I am struck by waves of nostalgia for the people and circumstances that led to this album. Every lyric can be traced back to a specific moment of inspiration. I have a collection of these moments stored in my memory like little treasures. For example: I’m staring out my bedroom window on a sleepless night of a new romance, watching the sun begin to rise; or speaking to a friend outside of a bar in Asheville when I suddenly become inexplicably sad, and rush home to write down my thoughts; or looking at old pictures of parties from my high school years and realizing how far away everyone seems to me now. These moments of inspiration often hit me unexpectedly, like stumbling upon a very interesting bug while walking in the woods. Something about the songwriting process helps the memories stay vivid.

When it was time to start working on this record, Mike thought we should take a different approach than we have in the past. He suggested that we play with a band in the studio with everyone tracking together, so that it felt like a real performance. At first I was nervous about this idea because it felt like I was giving up creative control. It’s much harder to edit and perfect the parts when everyone is doing live takes (especially without a metronome). But we committed to this approach, and the end result was more expansive and beautiful than either of us could have imagined on our own. All of the folks that played on this record added so much to the direction of the songs and the overall sound. It’s full of spontaneous ideas and accidental genius. It’s also made by humans reacting to each other in a performance, at a time when society is increasingly driven by machines and algorithms.

That’s a wrap on our summer tour! First time taking my little Melodigrand piano on the road! Insane… but worth it! So much fun playing and singing with @phiabird at all of these shows — that was such a treat. Thanks to everyone who hosted us, fed us, and supported us along the way. Now its time to stretch the old back haha

Our tour with @phiabird starts a week from today with a hometown show at @static_age_record_store ! Sophia is one of my favorite songwriters and one of our favorite musicians in Asheville to play with. We realized we had plans to tour around the same time as each other, so we put our heads together to do a combined tour! Both acts have lots of new music to share. It will be fun, collaborative, and experimental. Can’t wait to hit the road and see some old friends and hopefully make some new ones! by @slowpacker

Bellows is the bedroom recording project of songwriter and producer Oliver Kalb. The sound of Bellows is sensory and delicate, subtle and quiet, but erupts with frantic wobbling drums, large orchestral sections and bursts of noise that push the conventions of pop and folk. Started in late 2010 in a bedroom in upstate New York, Bellows has since blossomed from a solo recording experiment into a large-scale rock band, employing the help of friends to bring Kalb’s intimate home recordings to life on stage in sweeping, loud, and intense live performances.

Slow Packer is a collaborative music project between two brothers, Jack Victor and Mike Henry Johnson. The two of them started playing music together as young kids, and performed and recorded with various bands over the years. This project is a return to their roots, working side-by-side to create original songs that reflect their musical background and multitude of shared experiences.

Sophia Corinne - “Sophia Corinne harvests poetry for the lines of each song from her life, one lived paying attention. Her songs are witness to the raw difficulties and layered radiant joys that every heart bears. In both writing and voice, Sophia’s songs offer the companionship of something beautiful for us to hold close in any season. It’s been an amazing experience to play with these thoughtful and talented folks on our new record and in performances of the songs. Truly a blast for Mike and I, and our sound has gotten so much bigger with the addition of everyone’s unique style.

We’ll be playing through the new album at @bebopbottleshop in west asheville on Sunday, May 31st with many of the awesome musicians who played on The Taste Of Life. Its a free show so come on by and enjoy some tasty beverages while we play our new tunes. 5pm start, all ages by @slowpacker
