Let’s Bee Real…you can’t build comprehension without building vocabulary and foundational reading skills.📚

After reading a short narrative, students identified at least 5 words they didn’t know.
We then:
✨ Broke down the meaning of each word
✨ Used the narrative to build context around the words
✨ Connected the vocabulary to what was happening in the story
✨ Returned to the text to answer the “who, what, when, where, and how.”

Sometimes we say a student “struggles with comprehension” when the bigger issue is that they don’t yet have the foundational vocabulary and language skills needed to construct meaning from what they read.

If a student doesn’t understand the words, it becomes much harder to understand the events, relationships, details, and overall meaning of the narrative and ultimately answer comprehension questions.

Comprehension isn’t just about remembering the story. It’s about having the language and literacy foundation to make meaning from it.🧠📖

Build the foundation. Build the context. Then build comprehension. by @slp.bee.real

✨My Next Chapter!✨ I’m incredibly grateful and excited to share that I have joined the University of Houston’s Communication Sciences and Disorders program as an Adjunct Faculty Clinical Educator. 🐾❤️

And honestly? This one feels different.
Not simply because of the position, but because of what it represents and the journey that unknowingly prepared me for it.

I’ve always dreamed of working in higher education. And now, I have the opportunity to educate, supervise, encourage, and pour into graduate-level students—our future Speech-Language Pathologists! 🗣️

That’s right up my alley, right? 😂
But truly, this is what the unmerited favor of the Lord looks like. 🙏🏽

During my own graduate clinical experiences, I had supervisors who did so much more than teach me how to be a clinician. They challenged me. They encouraged me. They believed in me. They helped me find confidence in my clinical thinking.

As I always say: “You can be book smart, but you can’t fake clinical competence. Clinical work is the real deal!” 😂

Years later, I get the opportunity to sit on the other side of that experience. And that is a FULL-CIRCLE moment. 🤍

To the SLPs and clinicians who dream of teaching, mentoring, supervising, or stepping into higher education one day:
Keep going because your current season may be developing skills you don’t yet realize you’ll need for your next one. 👏🏽

The experience you’re gaining. The clients you’re helping.
The clinicians you’re becoming. The people pouring into you…None of it is wasted.

And to the future SLPs I’ll have the privilege of working with:
I cannot wait to learn from you, challenge you, cheer you on, and be a small part of your journey.

I’m stepping into this chapter with a grateful heart and a deep desire to pour back into the profession that has poured so much into me.

Feeling blessed.
Feeling grateful.
Feeling favored.

Here’s to new chapters, full-circle moments, and becoming the person I once prayed of becoming. ✨❤️🤍🐾🗣️🦻🏽

Back from my first business conference, and one thing became crystal clear: you have to get in the room & PUT in the work.

Although I want to be in the bed, doom scrolling, this morning wasn’t that kind of morning.

Since coming back, I’ve been hiring, delegating, and watching opportunities and blessings show up left and right. The conference didn’t magically change my business, it changed my perspective, my network, and my willingness to move differently AND PUT IN THE WORK! 👏🏽

Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t in what you know. It’s in who you meet, what you’re exposed to, and the room you’re willing to walk into.

Invest in yourself. Get in the room. Watch what happens. ✨🐝

Six years ago, Year of 2020, I packed up my life in a small town and took a chance on Houston, TX.

I wasn’t chasing a title. I was chasing possibility.

I refused to let someone else’s expectations define my ceiling and what was or wasn’t possible.

But sometimes the ceiling people talk about is only the ceiling they’ve accepted.

Year 6 in Houston looks nothing like Year 1, and I’m grateful I kept betting on myself when others couldn’t see the vision.

I am evident of growth through consistent effort.

Spiritually, I’m faithfully stewarding what God has given me. I am called to serve others through my gift.

Here’s to proving that where you start doesn’t determine where you’ll finish.

The motion was never luck.
It was consistency.
It was faith.
It was saying yes to opportunities that scared me.
It was showing up over and over again.

And I’m still just getting started. Cheers to Year 6 🥂👏🏽⚜️➡️🤟🏽 taken in Houston, Texas by @slp.bee.real

One way I recharged today… 💅🏽✨

After a day of learning about evaluating multilingual students, specifically through a Vietnamese language and cultural lens, I needed some quiet time to recharge.

Funny enough, even in my quiet moments, conversations still find their way to advocacy.

My nail tech asked what I did for work, and I gave my usual short answers because my social battery was low. 😂 But when I shared what I had learned about supporting multilingual students, his face lit up.

Not because I was talking *at* him about speech therapy, but because there was a cultural connection. We talked about Houston’s Vietnamese communities, the importance of looking beyond just the language, and how we use interpreters to better understand and support students during evaluations.

It reminded me that advocacy doesn’t always have to be a presentation, a workshop, or a big moment.

Sometimes it’s a simple conversation.
Sometimes it’s sharing your passion in a way that makes someone feel seen.
Sometimes it’s naturally inviting someone into the world of what we do.

This is how I show up for our field—quietly, authentically, and with purpose. 🤍

Let’s Bee Real 🐝 | Seven months changed more than I realized. In January, I thought growth meant doing more.

Today, I know growth also means saying no, protecting my peace, trusting my value, and building a life that doesn’t require constant validation.

I’m becoming someone January me wouldn’t even recognize—and I’m grateful for her!

Are you becoming her, yet? by @slp.bee.real

📚 Things They Didn’t Teach You in Grad School:
How to Prepare for the First Week of School as an SLP
Your first week is not about having the perfect therapy plans.
It’s about learning the system, building relationships, and setting yourself up for a successful year.

Here are the things I wish someone had told me:

✨ 1. Learn your assessment team.
Find out who handles testing, referrals, meetings, and eligibility decisions. Your assessment team will become some of your most important collaborators.

✨ 2. Get familiar with your campus.
Grab a school/facility map. Know where classrooms, special education offices, testing areas, and important resources are located.

✨ 3. Introduce yourself—everywhere.
Don’t just meet your SPED department.
Introduce yourself to:
✔️ Special education staff
✔️ Campus administrators
✔️ Teachers
✔️ Secretaries/front office staff
(Especially the front office! They are often the first people families and staff ask about you—make sure they know who you are.)

✨ 4. Send a “Meet the SLP” introduction.
A simple email or letter helps teachers and families know:
* Who you are
* How to contact you
* How you support students
* What collaboration will look like
*
✨ 5. Review your important dates.
Before the year gets busy, look ahead:
📅 IEP due dates
📅 Reevaluation dates
📅 Assessment timelines
📅 Meetings already scheduled

✨ 6. Run your caseload numbers frequently.
Your caseload is not static.
Students move.
Students enroll.
Services change.
Checking your numbers regularly helps you stay ahead instead of scrambling later.

✨ 7. Remember: relationships come before paperwork.
Your students, teachers, and team members are more likely to collaborate with you when they know you, trust you, and feel supported.

No one expects you to know everything on day one.
But showing up prepared, organized, and willing to connect will make a difference.

💛 Welcome to a new school year, SLPs. You’ve got this.
