The BEST 280SL Pagoda bar none.

Some commissions come with a long list of wants. This one came with a clear idea of how the car should drive. The client wanted a Pagoda for long-distance touring that would also be as good as it could possibly be on the road. They were just as clear about what it shouldn’t be: no wide arches, nothing shouty. It had to keep the elegance of the original and simply carry more pace.

The heart of the car is still the original 280 engine, rebuilt from the ground up. The crank has been balanced, and it now runs forged conrods and slipper pistons. A reprofiled camshaft brings more torque, and larger valves on both the inlet and exhaust side let the engine breathe properly. The intake is bespoke, developed with Jenvey.

The exhaust is titanium, free-flowing and calculated to give exactly the extraction the engine needs. Behind the engine sits a six-speed manual gearbox. The rear axle has been rebuilt with a Gripper limited-slip differential.

The brief relied just as much on the suspension, and the aim was the balance of a proper GT car: comfortable over distance, composed when pushed. Solid mounts and adjustable platforms allow the set-up to be fine-tuned.

There’s a Becker Grand Prix radio with Bluetooth. Climate is handled by one of SLSHOP’s own air conditioning systems, fitted so discreetly you’d struggle to spot it.

What you end up with is a Pagoda that looks exactly as it should and drives better than any other.

It was built for Mr and Mrs S. They are absolutely delighted. So are we. Thank you to all involved!

Here’s a question. What if one of the coolest Mercedes-Benz Roadsters ever made wasn’t the one with the Gullwing doors?

The 300SL might be the poster car, but the 190SL took much of that same 1950s Mercedes-Benz glamour and made it usable, ownable and, crucially, more attainable. It’s tempting to call it the little 300SL, but that misses the point.

This was the civilised Mercedes Roadster. Beautifully engineered, wonderfully analogue and built for the sort of driving that doesn’t need huge horsepower to put a smile on your face.

A willing four-cylinder engine, slick four-speed gearbox, beautifully detailed cabin and enough refinement to genuinely use it, whether that’s a Sunday morning drive or a tour across Europe.

The 300SL may be the icon. But the 190SL could just be the coolest classic Mercedes-Benz to actually own.
