I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better car to suit the day than this absolutely wonderful 500 SL! I was loving my hot guy summer dream running around in this for the day.

I want to say a huge thank you to @slshopuk for giving me the car to shoot, and also to @lucyolivia_covell for modelling for me!

The R107 SL. Loved by many for its 18-year production period. But like most things, the R107 was not without an Achilles heel.

You might’ve seen our 50/50 restored demonstration Bulkhead at the @practicalclassicsofficial Restoration Show at the NEC this weekend just gone.

Due to the concealed nature of the Bulkhead, it often gets overlooked during routine inspections such as MOTs and consequently over the years, hundreds of R107 SLs have quietly corroded at the behest of workshops proclaiming “out of sight, out of mind.”

As you can see from the left-hand side of the Bulkhead in front of you today, the impact is shocking.

The Bulkhead features several drainage holes at both ends and in the middle beneath the Plenum Chamber. These drainage routes can easily become blocked with leaves and other debris; on occasion, we have even seen these welded over!

The symptoms of a corroded Bulkhead include damp and musty carpets, fidgety electrics and in the worst-case scenario, a very fragile feeling when driving as the Bulkhead begins to deteriorate and flex.

To cure this issue, we developed a Bulkhead Restoration process utilising our exclusively developed Bulkhead repair panel. Over 15 years, we have carried out hundreds of Bulkhead restorations according to factory blueprints. As you can see from the right-hand side of the Bulkhead skeleton, our craftsmen work with millimetres of tolerance, dedicating 50 hours to each Bulkhead restoration to ensure the correct positioning of items like the Blower Motor.

So, if you’re considering buying an R107, inspect the Bulkhead and if necessary, ask for a certificate confirming an SLSHOP Bulkhead Restoration.
