I Kissed a Girl’s Amy Spalding is calling all D¥KES, Divas, and $luts to the front 💅 The founder of @sltstudios_, Amy Spalding has been making waves since leaving the masseria earlier this year. She’s been on a mission to empower Sapphics globally with engraved D¥KE rings that allow them to reclaim a word that has historically been used to shame. Spalding’s latest venture is a new campaign featuring some of London’s top divas — @itstayce, @catburns, and @lozeak — in celebration of a bold, new ring collection. “These rings are a physical reclamation of words that were once used to hurt us,” Spalding tells GAY TIMES. Her message is clear: ‘Decorate yourself with what was once meant to harm you.’ The inspiration behind these rings comes from Spalding’s own journey, reflecting on her younger, closeted self who was too scared to embrace her identity as a lesbian. “I minimised myself for fear of what others might think,” she shares. “We are living in Dykonic Times, baby. “It seems like a first world problem. A show’s been canceled. But it’s showing a bigger picture. Every minority is getting hit. Lesbians are being hit. Trans people have been hit. There are literally laws against trans women in the UK. This is just showing how society is regressing when we’re supposed to be progressing,” explains Thea Hallow, artist and season 1 cast member of I Kissed A Girl. Lesbian Visibility Week lands in the wake of the BBC’s announcement of the axing of the I Kissed A franchise, the UK’s first exclusively queer dating show. The cancellation of a TV show usually conjures backlash from fans, but this time it felt different. Publications covered the outrage, creators across the globe howled through their phones, outlining exactly why this was something to incite for, and a Change.org petition was signed over 15,000 times (at time of writing) demanding the BBC recommission the shows and ring-fence funding for LGBTQ+ programming. As lesbian visibility week comes to an end, it has never been more important to stand up & show up for dykes and queers everywhere. The news of IKAG’s cancellation has been a blow to so many, but the response this week has reinforced that we don’t need to wait for anyone to tell our stories for us. So is you’re thinking about a queer project, do it - start that lesbian literary society, your dyke drag night or that sapphic shibari soiree you’ve always dreamt of. Show up to marches, get to the polling booth (MAY 7TH) and check in on your queer friends and chosen family. The outpouring of love from all my dykonic sisters has been nothing short of amazing, and it’s a reminder that us DYKES gotta stick together now more than ever.
