Let’s just say we’re pretty happy with how things are getting started. 😂 A huge thank you to everyone who’s already stepped up, tied flies, donated materials or helped get this year’s effort rolling. And we’re just getting started. Every fly added to the pile helps support Colorado Trout Unlimited youth programs. Across the San Luis Valley, tanks are ready and soon students will begin one of the coolest parts of Trout in the Classroom — watching those tiny eggs hatch and grow right in front of them. 🎨🐟 K–12 TIC STUDENTS — DESIGN THE 2027 ALL-VALLEY RELEASE STICKER! This year, San Luis Valley Trout Unlimited is putting the design of our 2027 All-Valley Trout in the Classroom Release sticker in the hands of Valley students attending a school with Trout in the Classroom! The competition is open to K–12 students attending a San Luis Valley school with an active Trout in the Classroom tank. Students do not have to personally participate in Trout in the Classroom to enter. Because this contest is part of Trout in the Classroom, eligibility is limited to students attending schools that currently have an active SLV TU Trout in the Classroom tank. 🏫 ELIGIBLE SCHOOLS Antonito • Centauri • Del Norte • Monte Vista High School • Monte Vista Middle School • Sangre de Cristo • Sierra Grande • Trinity Lutheran 🎨 THE CHALLENGE Create an original, hand-drawn sticker design that includes: 🐟 A rainbow trout 🏔️ Something that represents the San Luis Valley or its waters Be creative — the rest is up to you! 🏆 PRIZES 🥇 1st Place — $75 + your artwork becomes the official 2027 All-Valley Release Sticker! 🥈 2nd Place — $50 🥉 3rd Place — $25 A judging group will select three finalists, and then we’ll turn it over to the community! The finalists will be posted online for a public vote to determine first, second, and third place. 📅 ENTRIES DUE DECEMBER 16, 2026 Entry forms are available from your school’s Trout in the Classroom teacher and must be returned to your TIC teacher by December 16. Not sure who your school’s Trout in the Classroom teacher is? Send San Luis Valley Trout Unlimited a direct message and we’ll get you connected. The winning design will be professionally prepared and become the official sticker handed out at the All-Valley Trout in the Classroom Release on March 11, 2027, in Del Norte. A LITTLE WORK GOES A LONG WAY! 🏔️ 🗑️ The San Luis Valley Trout Unlimited crew was back at it today, doing our part to keep the Valley beautiful! Our volunteers headed out to Highway 149 near the Coller State Wildlife Area, north of South Fork, for our fall highway cleanup. Twice a year, SLV TU volunteers roll up their sleeves, grab their trash bags, and tackle the litter along this stretch of highway. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s an important part of taking care of the places we all enjoy. Conservation isn’t always about trout and rivers. Sometimes it’s simply about picking up the trash and leaving a place better than you found it. A big thank-you to everyone who gave up part of their Sunday to lend a hand. This is bigger than just a fish. That message was recently shared by one of our partners, and it gets right to the heart of what Trout in the Classroom is about. Yes, we raise trout. But those trout become a tool for students to learn about water quality, aquatic ecosystems, fisheries, responsibility, conservation, and the Rio Grande watershed they call home. And we don’t do it alone. A huge THANK YOU to Conejos River Anglers, Rio Grande Hospital, South Fork Veterinary Clinic, San Luis Valley Federal Bank, Rio Grande Headwaters Restoration Project and Guys and Gal Sign Shop for stepping up to support our students and Trout in the Classroom. Some provide financial support. Some provide materials or services. Some have been helping since before we ever called this partnership effort YCEP. What matters is that each has chosen to invest in Valley kids and the future of our water. Our Youth Conservation Education Partners aren’t just sponsoring fish tanks. They’re helping build experiences that can stay with students long after the trout leave the classroom. There is still plenty of room at the table. If your business or organization believes in kids, water, conservation, agriculture, healthy fisheries, or simply investing in the future of the San Luis Valley, don’t miss your chance to be part of something bigger. A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS! Yesterday’s fly-tying session at Adams State wouldn’t happen without volunteers willing to sit down, share what they know, and help someone learn a new skill. A huge thank you to the volunteers who came out and helped us teach. Whether it was demonstrating a technique, fixing a fly that went sideways, or simply helping someone figure out what to do next, this is what passing it on looks like.
