Two more Revolutionary War sites today: Washington’s Crossing and Valley Forge!

We started at the site where Washington and the Continental Army crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day 1776 to fight the Hessians in the Battle of Trenton. We checked out the exhibits at the visitor center and then walked the path by the river there was a boathouse with replica boats like the ones they used to cross the river.

Our next stop was Valley Forge National Historic Park, where Washington and the Continental Army took refuge in the winter of 1778-1779. After viewing the park film and exhibits, we did the encampment driving tour. Along the route there were replicas of the log huts that they built which helped give us an idea of the crowded conditions and how they lived. We learned that around 2,000 soldiers (1 out of every 6) died at Valley Forge from disease and malnutrition. We also saw the house that Washington rented and made his headquarters while they were camped there. Unfortunately it was being restored so we couldn’t go inside or get unobstructed views.

We went back to Philadelphia today to visit the Museum of the American Revolution.

They have chronological galleries that bring your step by step through the American Revolution. Interspersed through the galleries are short videos that kept the kids’ attention. They had a lot of interesting artifacts, as well, including George Washington’s field tent.

Having visited a few Revolutionary War sites already this trip, it’s neat to be able to visit a museum like this and have the kids put the pieces together with the timeline and point out places/events and say, “Hey, we’ve been there and learned about that!”

Today we explored our 47th state, Delaware!

Delaware was the first to ratify the Constitution and they pride themselves on being the first state.

Our first stop was at First State National Historic Park in New Castle. We saw the old courthouse and visited the visitor center, which was located in the historic sheriff’s house.

Our second stop was Winterthur Museum, which was a former du Pont family estate. Henry Francis du Pont, the third generation of du Ponts to live on the estate, decided to collect antiques and transform the mansion into a museum of American decorative arts in the 1950s. A few highlights were silver tankards made by Paul Revere and a painting by Benjamin West of the Treaty of Paris, which was interestingly unfinished because the British delegates refused to pose for their portrait that commemorated British defeat.

There also were extensive gardens that we enjoyed walking around. The kids loved the Enchanted Woods!

So much early American history in Philadelphia!

We visited quite a few of historic sites at Independence National Historic Park today. We saw the Liberty Bell and then learned about the life of Ben Franklin at the Ben Franklin Museum and home site. We visited the Old City Hall, where the first US Supreme Court cases were heard. We toured Congress Hall, where Congress met from 1790-1800 while Philadelphia was the temporary US capital. We also took a guided tour of Independence Hall. It was very impactful to be in the room where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were both signed and our country was formed.

And while in Philadelphia, we had to enjoy Philly cheesesteaks and Pennsylvania Dutch donuts at the Reading Terminal Market for lunch!

While planning this trip, out of all the cities in the northeast, New York City felt like logistically it was going to be the hardest to make work. There aren’t a lot of campground options within a reasonable drive, and parking/ public transportation with the 7 of us seemed like it might be too much of a headache.

At one point we told the kids we likely weren’t going to be able to do NYC and they were so sad- mostly because they wanted to go to the Statue of Liberty. So we did some research on ferry options from New Jersey, rented a car, and drove 2 hours to make it happen.

We started our NYC day with a ferry to Manhattan. We walked to the 9/11 Memorial to see the pools and visit the museum. The exhibits are really well done. We were worried that it might be heavy emotionally for the kids, or that they wouldn’t understand the somber nature of the memorial, but they all were respectful and interested. They connected with all the stories of the heroes who jumped to action and those who lost their lives.

We then walked to Castle Clinton National Monument and took a minute to see the old fort/battery and learn about it’s history protecting the harbor, being a place for entertainment, and then an immigration center.

We boarded a ferry near the battery to head out to the Statue of Liberty. We walked around the island and up into the pedestal to see her, and then checked out the museum. Lastly we took a ferry to Ellis Island and did an audio tour through the main immigration building.

It was a long day, for sure, but we were able to make the trip out to NYC! One day we hope to make another trip out to see more of the city.

We explored the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut today! This was a really fun museum with all things maritime. We started with a tour through the shipyard where they restore historic wooden ships. Then we walked through their recreated 19th century seaport village and wooden whaling ship. The village buildings were all from the 1800s and transported to the museum from all over New England. They had shops for all sorts of different merchants and trades- including blacksmiths, coopers, printers, and ship carvers. They also had an interactive LEGO exhibit called Brickwrecks, which had collection of LEGo models of historic shipwrecks - the kids thought that was fun!

Today we visited state number 46, Rhode Island! We toured three of the Gilded Age mansions in Newport- The Breakers, Rosecliff, and the Marble House. It’s really comical that the millionaires who were the original owners of these mansions called them their summer “cottages”. They are so extravagant, ornate, and over the top, but that is what makes them so interesting to walk through. You can imagine all the balls and parties that would have taken place there in the late 1800’s/early 1900s. We did audio tours for each of the mansions and after we walked the Cliff Walk in between them to see the ocean views.

We drove out to Lexington and Concord today! We visited the Minute Man National Historic Park. The visitor center had a great multimedia experience called the Road to Revolution that explained what happened to lead up to and during the first battle of the Revolutionary War. We walked portions of the Battle Road and out to the North Bridge in Concord to see where the “shot heard ‘round the world” happened. We also attended a ranger program where they were dressed in period attire and demonstrated how a musket was fired.

Later we made a stop at Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House in Concord. Months ago, when we were planning our stops for this trip, Leah found this site and asked if we could plan to do a tour of the house. Sandy and the girls have read all of the Little Women Books, so we agreed it would be a fun place to visit. The house has mostly all of the original furniture and Alcott belongings, including the desk in Louisa’s room that she use when writing her books.

We walked 9 miles around the city of Boston today! The kids have been studying US history in school this year, most recently the American Revolution, so we were excited to see so many places that are in our history books. We walked the Freedom Trail starting at the Boston Commons and saw all sixteen sites.

Some of our favorites were:
- Paul Revere’s house: The house was built in 1680 and is the oldest remaining building in downtown Boston. The old wood was creaking and it smelled so old- we loved it!
- The Old North Church: Famous for the one if by land, two if by sea lanterns on the night of Paul Revere’s (and William Dawes’s) ride, we had to tour the building. The audio tour was great and we learned a lot of interesting facts. The main floor of the church was made up of boxed in pews that members would buy for their families. We also got to see the crypts below.
- The Bunker Hill Monument: We enjoyed the museum and some of the family made the trek up 294 stairs to the top of the obelisk. The views of Boston and Charlestown were beautiful.
- The Charlestown Navy Yard: We learned about the history of the yard and ships at the visitor center, toured the USS Cassin Young destroyer ship from WWII, and saw the dry dock and the USS Constitution, which is an old ironside from the War of 1812 and is the oldest commissioned war ship still in the water. Sadly we got to this site too late and missed the opportunity to tour it.

We made it to Massachusetts! Today we got to explore Plymouth followed by a quick trip out to Cape Cod National Seashore.

We started at the Plimoth-Patuxet Museum. This place was really fun! They had a replica of the 17th century Pilgrim village and a Wampanoag village. It is a living history museums with actors playing the parts of specific people from the village. Everything was interactive. They answered questions and even welcomed the kids to help with chores and try things out.

Then we went to see Plymouth Rock and did a tour of a replica of the Mayflower. We were amazed that they fit 102 people in that ‘tween deck- and for 66 days!

Next we made a stop at the Plymouth Grist Mill. They did a great job explaining how it works and showing us the mechanics of the water wheel and gears. They also had a lot of hands on exhibits that explain simple machines.

Lastly we drove out to Cape Cod National Seashore. We walked through the Salt Pond Visitor Center exhibits, drove out to Nauset Lighthouse, and searched for some views of the coastline.
