There are plenty of places to grab lunch in the West Village. I picked the gas station. 😂

Smacking Burger is tucked inside the Mobil station at 8th Ave & Horatio, serving made-to-order smash burgers, fries and a very good excuse to stop for gas.

The Big Smack had those crispy, lacy edges I love, and the Truff was rich, mushroomy and seriously indulgent.

Not a bad place to fill your stomach and your gas tank.

Smacking Burger is a burger joint in the West Village, in the middle of Manhattan in New York, located in the kiosk of a fully functioning gas station. Think of it as the American cousin of Gasoline Grill in Copenhagen. The outdoor seating area was covered in snow during our visit, but the information signs suggested that this is a popular spot when the weather permits. The menu had a handful of different burgers, and we ordered The Classic with cheese, caramelised onions, butter crunch pickles, ketchup and mustard for 6.5 USD, adding an extra patty for an additional 2.5 USD. We also ordered the The Oklahoma with double beef patties, American cheese, butter crunch pickles and a horseradish sauce for 10 USD. With this we ordered a portion of fries for 4 USD.

We could follow the cooking process right there, and it looked very promising as the small kiosk was filled with a strong aroma of caramelised onions. Our arrived wrapped in greasy paper, and the soft bun around our Classic burger had been steamed far too much. The beef had a nice crust and flavour. The Oklahoma was a real highlight, and here the onions gave both structure and a deep, fried onion flavour. The horseradish sauce was yummy and added a welcome flavour punch, making this our favourite burger of the two. The caramelised onions in the Classic were very soft, and we would have preferred raw onions for a slightly crunchier texture. The pickles were fresh and very crunchy though, but they couldn’t shoulder this job on their own. The fries should have been crispier, but they tasted nice.

Smacking Burger have a clear identity and a lot of variety on their menu, making them an ideal visit if you want to fill up your gas with petrol and your belly with burgers at the same place.

Prendete dell’ottima carne e smashatela a dovere. Poi mettete un paio di tavolini sul piazzale della vostra pompa di benzina e voilà: ecco a voi @smackingburger uno di quei posti che fanno capire perché lo smash burger è diventato un’ossessione a New York.

Aprile 2024, 8th Avenue angolo 13th Street. Sul confine tra West Village e Chelsea, Tommy Hondros gestisce una stazione di servizio. La sua amica Elizabeth Torres, co‑fondatrice e mente creativa del progetto, proviene da una famiglia di ristoratori e aveva in mente di mettere a frutto il suo estro creativo e culinario, creando un menu semplice, gustoso e accessibile. Così i due decidono di unirsi per dar vita ad un sogno: fare dei burger perfetti.

La filosofia è chiara: pochi ingredienti, tecnica impeccabile, sapore al centro. 100% prime Angus beef, cipolle, American cheese, sale e pepe. La carne viene cotta sulla piastra rovente fino a ottenere quella crosticina croccante e caramellata che fa girare la testa a chi ama i burger, il Martin’s potato bun è morbido e regge alla grande ogni patty, e la loro salsa speciale lega tutto in un morso da applausi.

Non è solo un burger: è street food di qualità, nato in un angolo improbabile di NYC, con tavolini all’aperto e atmosfera autentica. Aperto fino a tardi, è perfetto per un pranzo veloce, una cena o anche un burger notturno. Praticamente un Autogrill versione hardcore.

Dopo averlo provato ho capito perché è diventato subito un riferimento non solo per chi ama i burger, ma anche per chi vuole capire come pochi elementi, combinati e preparati alla perfezione, possano fare la differenza. Anche se, mentre lo addenti, davanti a te c’è gente che fa benzina. This is New York, baby!

I think @smackingburger might be my favorite smash burgers! Their loaded fries to start with was fire—honestly I’d recommend each burger I tried, good flavor and also well portioned

BROTHERLY BURGERS EP. 4 🍔

The 4th NYC burger review is Smacking Burger in a West Village Mobil gas station. Nick tried their SMACK Burger and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. The bun in particular was one of the best executed buns we’ve tried so far. It hit on all the fundamentals and was overall a solid burger.
