The best burgers in NYC, depending on what kind of burger person you are.

My brother and I are ranking every burger in NYC. This time, we mapped 20 of our favorites across Manhattan and Brooklyn, from classic to inventive and from smashburgers to thick patties.

A few reference points:

Classic thick patty: Red Hook Tavern (Red Hook, Brooklyn).
Inventive thick patty: Lord’s (Greenwich Village).
Classic smashburger: Gotham Burger Social Club (Lower East Side).
Inventive smashburger: Nowon (East Village).

This is a style map, not a ranking. Higher doesn’t mean better.

Also on the classic side:
4 Charles (West Village), Lion’s Bar (East Village), Yesterday’s (Greenwich Village), Hamburger America (SoHo), White Horse Tavern (West Village), The Spaniard (West Village), Flat Out Burger (Lower East Side), and 7th Street Burger (East Village).

Also on the inventive side:
Cafe Kestrel (Red Hook, Brooklyn), Rule of Thirds (Greenpoint, Brooklyn), Txula Steak (Hudson Yards), Sip & Guzzle (West Village), Golden HOF (Midtown), Swoony’s (Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn), Do Not Disturb (West Village), and Smacking Burger (West Village).

Which quadrant are you defending?

Save this for the next time the group chat can’t agree on a burger.

Best NYC burgers under $20 🍔

We’re ranking every burger in New York City, and these are nine of our favorite spots where the price is part of the appeal, not something you have to make peace with.

Send this to the friend who refuses to pay $30 for a burger. Save it for your next burger run.
