Bobby Nachos’ Outboard Originals - Number Eleven

These watercolor outboards were painted by artist (and lifelong boat nerd) @bobbynachos —real name Robert Hawkins. Each one is based on a used aluminum outboard he found on Facebook Marketplace, most of them from Minnesota, all of them full of character.

We've been releasing the Outboard Originals one at a time over the past year. These are the last three we've put up. If you recognize a boat, or actually owned one we’d love to hear the story (photos welcome).

This Week in Small Craft: October 9th, 2026

A few things worth your attention this week:

@americanrivers has good news from the Grand Canyon, where the Navajo Nation designated land around the Confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers as a sacred site.

@paddlingmagazine looks at the paddlesports industry’s move away from PFAS “forever chemicals.”

@clcboats is offering private boatbuilding classes in Annapolis for people who want to spend a week building something instead of buying it.

@aspensnowmass covered piles of snow with insulated blankets all summer and kept more than 80 percent of it. Weird. Smart. Water-saving.

@americanwhitewater has a new accident summary out, plus a court win involving Missouri’s Tunnel Dam.

And if you’re in Colorado, Rally for Rivers hits @downriverequipment on October 16 with films benefiting @protectourrivers_org and @glencanyon_institute

And the 2026 River Runners Hall of Fame @jwpmuseum

We don’t think we’ve EVER seen an accessory list this long. This 1984 Avon comes with a PILE of extras—we counted 20+—and the owner says the tubes are still in good shape.

I nearly ruined a newly refurbished wooden drift boat by leaving it flat on its trailer through a stretch of storms. Standing water, swollen wood, broken chines. Heartbreaker.

Small Craft Stories: Big Drop Boat Works

Buying an old wooden boat is a good way to acquire a project before you fully understand what you’ve signed up for. I bought Canyon Wren, a Grand Canyon river dory from the ’80s, from a friend, thinking I’d take her down the canyon on a recent permit. More on that later... That didn’t happen for a few reasons, chief among them my questionable time management skills. The work she needed and the time I had weren’t remotely compatible.

Naturally, I called THE wooden river dory shop, @fretwaterboatworks in Flagstaff, hoping to slide into their schedule. Ha! A year or more out. Worth the wait? Absolutely. Am I that patient? Apparently not. @cricket_fretwaterboatworks at Fretwater pointed me toward the ladies at Big Drop Boat Works in Moab, and that’s where Canyon Wren landed. They've been handling her restoration and getting intimately acquainted with everything hiding beneath the paint and fiberglass.

With that work underway, I wanted to introduce the women bringing her back. Like plenty of good river ideas, their boat shop began with beers and a conversation after a long day on the water. The question was simple: Why weren’t there more wooden dories running rivers above Glen Canyon Dam? Unlike most late-night river schemes, this one eventually became an actual business.

I caught up with Anabelle and "G" to talk about the mentors who helped them get started, the realities of opening a wooden boat shop in the desert, and their belief that beautiful boats ought to spend their lives getting used. As someone hoping to get a lot better acquainted with Canyon Wren at the oars, I’m all for that.
